And for the record, I like Cody Rhodes.
I don’t think him beating Roman at WrestleMania would’ve been the right call (for many reasons), but the build this year for Cody has been great and now is the time for him to get that WWE Championship.

I’d hardly call almost 3 years as the top babyface/heel on RAW (mostly as the WWE Champion) as “booking not changing”. Some research of where Punk was on the card before that promo says everything. Maybe re-watch that promo. He threatened to walk if things didn’t change. They did change. MITB 2011 alone was a turning point for the “new faces” of WWE. Even for our precious “American Nightmare”.[img src="https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240123/7aaa68499544567250d5b65d05597581.jpg"] 2012 where Punk was WWE champion wrestling on the mid card when Johnny Ace was main eventing PPVs say otherwise. Did things improve for Punk? Sure. But did he get what he really wanted? Hard to say. Less than 3 years later he took his ball and went home.

Oh, his face run for most of 2012 was absolutely botched in favor of getting John Cena vs. The Rock over, which was one of Punk’s biggest gripes. The John Laurinaitis thing only last 2-3 events. Oddly enough, during the Punk/Bryan feud. Once he turned heel with Heyman, he went right back to headlining Pay-Per-Views during that stretch. Then shortly before his departure, was back in the upper mid-card working the The Shield. Of course he got what he wanted. He got the opportunity to be a “top guy” of the company and minus a few short months, he was a “top guy” on RAW for most of the time post-“pipebomb”. Felt he was wronged in many ways and he left.

I'm sure you don't realize this but you're halfway making my point. Punk cut the pipebomb. And he stayed. Continued to get pushed aside. He left and just went home. Nothing really changed. Cody wasn't happy and he left WWE. Went to ROH. Went to the idies. Helped create a promotion. He literally helped change the entire business. One guy stayed and got let down and walked out. The other guy bet on himself and became one of the hottest names not in WWE. Now ask yourself which guy sounds more like "CM Punk"

I’m not helping your point in the slightest bit. You’re continuing to ignore what was in that promo and the complete 180° that followed for CM Punk’s position in the WWE. Now, 2014 is a different story. Guy felt wrong on many levels and walked.
The point I’m making is Cody claims he “picked up the torch”. Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose “picked up the torch” that Punk didn’t pass. Dude was painted up and doing cartwheels with Stephen Amell. He then went to a dying Ring of Honor and did some forgettable things, including winning the ROH Championship. In a time where that title was garbage and the undercard was the bright spot on those cards. So much that by the time the “other” company started, people were sick of him and his Kevin Nash-like creative decisions.
Only thing I’ll give him, he became “The American Nightmare”, which is playing off of his father’s nickname. Dusty passing was one of the biggest benefits to Cody’s character, to have the Rhodes name live on through him. By paying an homage to Dusty. He’s also very lucky that fans took to him in the WWE, because he was doing the same thing elsewhere and fans got sick of it. Only difference, is he doesn’t have complete creative control over his character. Which is extremely good for him and his current/future career in the WWE.
I will say, rewatching last night’s promo… it’s better than my initial opinion. Still think Rollins/Punk’s was better, but this promo still delivered. Did the job of hyping the Rumble and making things seem personal between the two.

As for changing the business? Again, Punk is a huge reason guys like: Daniel Bryan, Seth Rollins, AJ Styles, etc. were given the opportunities they received.

If it wasn't for guys like Eddie, Benoit, Jericho and Edge then Punk wouldn't be what he is/was. Which they can thank Shawn and Bret for paving that path. And yeah, you are making my point. You're digging way to deep for something that is easily discovered on the surface. I got it. The live crowd got it. Most everyone on the internet got it. If we're going through wrestling promos with a fine tooth comb picking out inaccuracies and history manipulation to fit the current story then we could literally go back and forth all day

I thought Cody came off bad in that promo. Cody talked about how Punk left, while Cody took that spot. Punk left in 2014, Cody left in 2016. It’s like Cody did part of the Seth Rollins promo from several weeks ago… but he shouldn’t have. It made no sense. It was literally the initial point that I made. The inaccuracy of Cody’s promo. 🤣

Punk sat on the stage and talked about being unhappy. He talked about going to ROH. He talked about alot of things. And he stayed with WWE. So he didn't do anything he said, storyline wise. Cody wasn't happy and asked for his release and went to ROH, Japan and the indies. Punk talked about doing it. Cody did it. I thought it was a brilliant back and forth and laid the foundation for a huge program in the future. Cody’s promo last night was about taking Punk’s spot when he left. Which he never did and left shortly after Punk did… because he wasn’t being used. I think Cody was referring to mostly his career outside of WWE after leaving. Like the waves he was making in the wrestling industry and then the creation of AEW. Punk didn't do much of that when he left. That's why he brought up the line where he mentioned that Punk just dropped the torch and Cody was the one who picked it up.

The inaccuracy of Cody’s promo. 🤣 You're thinking within a WWE bubble. It's much more grand scheme than that. You've got a guy who shouldn't have made it. Abrasive personality. Thinks he right all the time. Believes he's the best and will tell you. He made it. Against all odds. That's where the American Dream line comes in. Then you've got a guy who had every tool basically handed to him and he wasn't successful. American Nightmare. He had to start from the bottom and now he's a top 3 name in pro wrestling. It's literally as simple as Punk was in a position to "pass the torch" and didn't. He got what he wanted until he didn't then he left. Cody begged for an opportunity and best they could give him was Stardust. He wanted to leave and got his release. He didn't stay in WWE unhappy. He went his own way and lit it up. Naysayers will naysay but Cody just didn't pop up at Mania 38 to a road Warrior pop for no reason. He did it his own way and earned what he got. Hence the more CM Punk than you line You're digging way too deep into a 2014 and 2016 line of the segment. That could've been a mistep or it could've been written. Who knows. But you said Cody looked bad over one line meanwhile the wrestling world is hyped today and that segment was a big factor in it.
