CYGY’S VIEW: NO WRESTLING FOR ITALY
By: Marcus Cygy – August 29, 2007
It was just two days ago when I arrived back in Canada from my nearly four week vacation in the good country of Italy. Upon going there, I didn’t realize I would be restricted from Internet use, and barred from watching wrestling on TV. All WWE and TNA Wrestling programs have been removed from all the Italian television markets in wake of the recent Chris Benoit tragedy. The reason…the Italian government doesn’t want young kids over there to look up to a “murderer”. Thus they’ve become a nation starved for wrestling, one of their main loves.
Overall, my vacation was a huge success. I couldn’t have asked for a better time during my third trip to Italy. I also stopped by to visit Austria for my first time, as well as France. The beaches were bar none, some of the best beaches you can find in the world! But I just couldn’t help but miss watching wrestling on TV, and that’s something I began talking about very in-depth over there with my cousin who watches WWE. He told me that he, along with his friends are hoping and wishing that they get wrestling back on TV, because honestly, and I even witnessed this on my own account, the country of Italy is starving for wrestling. I went to the local supermarket over there and sure enough there were WWE and TNA action figures. I saw four kids buy themselves WWE toy replica belts and soon after they were imitating their favourite WWE Superstars in the parking lot. Sure Chris Benoit turned out to be a murderer in the end, but that wasn’t anyone’s fault but his own ultimately. The result of this case has not been a fair one for Italy in my view.
There is however one way to still catch TNA, and that’s by satellite, but not everyone has that capability, my cousin does not. WWE themselves realize they’ve lost a really hot market for wrestling, and it was announced on local news stations there that they will be releasing the RAW, SmackDown, and ECW shows that emanated from Italy earlier this year on a very special DVD release exclusively for Italy. After that announcement, all the Italian kids and even adults were encouraging each other to buy this DVD package to show that they want wrestling back in Italy. I’m telling you, they’re serious about their wrestling there; they even include it in their news programs. It certainly helps with Bret Hart living there with his wife now as well. If I was living there, I’d be right in there protesting as well.
We’ll have to wait and see, but I do know if they get their wrestling back, my cousin Ruben will be the first to tell me!
