Because of what happened with the womens title previously where it was chucked in the bin live on Nitro. He couldn't put his full trust in Bret. He left the WWF after SS but had already signed a deal with WCW beforehand, but just didn't debut until December. So Vince was unsure if Bret, who'd already signed a deal with WCW, would take the belt with him or not so he did what he thought he needed to do and got Earl Hebnar to stop the match.

Just think, if it probably wasn't for Alundra Blayze or whoever the hell dropped the womens title in the garbage, the Montreal screwjob more than likely would have never happened.

That's a bit farfetched, as Flair wore the NWA/WCW title on WWF promos during the early 90's, so taking one companies belt and trashing it on another was not all thanks to Alundra Blayze. Also, Shane Douglas did something similar in the early days of ECW when he became NWA champion.
