1. John Cenais number one for the second year in a row and for good reason. He has been WWE champ 22 of the last 26 months and all of the last 12. He won the WWE title for the first time on April 2, 2005 at Wrestlemania 21 by defeating John Bradshaw Layfield ending JBL’s 10 month title reign. Cena then tears through some of the greatest in WWE history such as Chris Jericho, Shawn Michaels, Christian, and Pittsburgh’s own Kurt Angle. He did defeat all of the opponents that were put in his way until January 6, 2006. John Cena was scheduled to have only one match at a Pay-Per-View on Jan. 6th called New Years Revolution. The match was called the Elimination Chamber. The Elimination Chamber is a cylindrical shaped cage with a roof, all siding and flooring is made from steel. Inside of the chamber are four “containment” chambers and a ring which is level with the floor. The participants were Cena, Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angle, Kane, Chris Masters, and Carlito “Caribbean Cool.” John Cena bloodied and battered, still managed to defeat all of the five oppositions, but not without taking a heavy toll. Not only was his physical condition so bad that he could not stand with out the ref’s help, there was a man who was waiting in the shadows. Waiting to take Cena’s gold and he did just that. “The Rated-R Superstar” Edge had, previous months before, won an opportunity to challenge Cena for his title at anytime throughout the next year. And with Edge being ever so opportunistic, he challenged the destroyed Cena to a match then and there, and seeing as Cena had to accept, the match was on and off within one minute, with Edge tackling Cena to the ground and pinning him 1-2-3. Edge’s title reign however, was to be very short lived when on January 23, 2006 Cena defeated Edge to regain what in many’s eyes was rightfully his. John would then, 6 months later be challenged, and lose his WWE title to an up and coming star named Rob Van Dam. RVD as he has come to be known would then loose the title on one named Edge on August 7, 2006. However Edge’s 2nd go around as champ would be short-lived as well, seeing as on September 17, 2006 John defeated Edge in Edge’s hometown of Toronto to, for a third time, regain the WWE title. And from that date till now, John is still champion. At this time next year I do not expect Cena to be as popular as he is now, but he will still be a major part of the business for now and years to come.
2. John Morrison is number two on my list this year. In the 2006 Pro Wrestling Insider (PWI) best 500, Morrison was number 72/500. He debuted on April 15, 2005 and along with Joey Mercury, they won the WWE Tag Team titles from Rey Mysterio and the late, great Eddie Guerrero. Then on July 4, 2005 lost the titles to Animal and Heidenriech. Then on September 10, 2005 Morrison and Mercury regained the tag titles, but then would lose them on January 8, 2006 to Batista and Rey Mysterio, but on January 12, 2006 Mercury and Morrison regained. Then on July 18, 2006 Paul London and Brian Kendrick won the titles and beat Morrison and company time and time again until Morrison and Mercury gave up. Mercury was soon fired from WWE, and Morrison slowly drifted into minimal status. However on June 18, 2007 due to tragic events, Morrison was instantly bumped into the ECW (a break-off brand of WWE) World title spot. Originally it was supposed to be C.M Punk versus “The Rabid Wolverine” Chris Benoit. But as you and many others know, earlier on June 18th, Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy, and his son Daniel were all found dead in the Benoit home in Atlanta, Georgia. Anyways, Morrison was put into the match in place of Benoit, and seeing as Benoit was to win, Morrison won the ECW world title. What an interesting turn of events, ‘eh? He has a motley of signature maneuvers, but more than none, he will use a corkscrew neck-breaker.
3. Christian Cage (A.K.A Christian) was in WWE for almost, if not 10 years and was never a major player. His biologic brother is Edge. Anyways with the exception of the feud with John Cena, Cage really has not had world title matches in WWE. He was mostly a tag team competitor. He won 7 tag team titles with Edge. That is the most with one partner ever. The funny thing is, Cage is a very talented wrestler. But seeing as we are talking about WWE here, of course they never gave him a real shot to be on his own. WWE is severely noted for giving all of its so-so wrestlers all the best positions, and they leave the great veterans in the dust. But that was, in the end, a superb thing in Christian’s case. Seeing as he got fed up with WWE, he went to another wrestling organization called TNA. Two words…….GREAT MOVE! Immediately TNA writers and officiators saw Cage’s potential and within a few short months, Cage knocked off the then NWA world champ Jeff Jarrett (which, might I add is no easy feat) to become NWA champ. Christian then lost the title to Jarrett sometime August 2006, and did not regain it until March 2007, then in May 2007, Cage lost the NWA world title to Kurt Angle. While you might wonder why he deserves number 3, I say the answer is right there. He went from being beaten left and right and super unappreciated in WWE to jumping to TNA and almost immediately winning world title gold. That in my mind is a big step up. His finisher is a version of the “Tomakazee” called the “Unprettier.”
4. Kenta Kobashi is probably the last name you expected here for two reasons. Number one, he is not exactly the most well known wrestler in America. Number two he is an All Japan Pro Wrestling wrestler. But I think he is well deserving of number 4. This guy has tons of ups, and very few downs. He had a two year long NOAH world title run, former three time Triple Crown champion, GHC tag titles, not to mention that he recently recovered from a surgery that removed a cancerous tumor on his kidneys. But for the most part, a great wrestler who at 39, seems to have no signs of slowing. His finisher is called the “Burning Hammer” an upside-down version of Rene Dupree’s “Death Valley Driver.”
5. Edge is in my mind the greatest wrestler alive today. No not because of his character, but because of his amazing repertoire. Edges has so many hidden moves in his move set that he could wrestle 3 matches, and never repeat the same moves. I believe that since he started wrestling to now, he is one of the, if not the most improved wrestlers ever. Had you told me 12 years ago that Edge would be as god as he is now, I would have called you crazy. But I remember thinking around New Years 2005 into 2006 how much Edge deserved a world title. Then I was on www.wwe.com on January 6, 2006, and I was looking at the RAW roster thinking oh boy, Cena is going to win yet another WWE title defense at New Years Revolution. I go to WWE.com the next day and what do I see? EDGE WWE CHAMPION! But sadly he loses that title on January 23, 2006. However he would regain it on an August edition of RAW. Then, much to my despise, he loses the WWE title to Cena on September 17, 2006. Then in May 2007, Edge shorts Mr. Kennedy out of his Money in the Bank shot. Then that Friday, Batista is in a World Heavyweight title match with the champ The Undertaker, The Undertaker wins, but a man named Mark Henry, yes I mean the Olympian, comes out and attacks The Undertaker. Now, seeing as Edge is so opportunistic, he runs down the ramp, into the ring and uses the Money in the Bank to challenge Undertaker, much like he did to John Cena a year ago, and Edge wins. In July however, while feuding with Kane, Edge is injured and put on the shelf for a while, thus vacating the World title. Edge has a variety of finishers. Most commonly used is “The Cutting Edge” which is a full body tackle.
6. The Great Khali is America’s next best thing. The kids love him. I always catch my 6 year old neighbor saying “Aghuaggabluauah.” And if you believe me, then you need about as much help as his trainer did when Khali accidentally killed him. But I remember last year, all of this stuff people were saying about him saying that he would never flower in the WWE. Little did anyone know that Edge was going to get hurt and Khali would win a battle royal for the World Heavyweight Championship. That is the only reason I booked Khali in the top 10. If I was going on repertoire, he would not even make the list at all. A chop to the head. A big boot. A clothesline. A power bomb. Squeeze the opponents head. Congrats, you have now seen a Great Khali match.
7. I lied when I said Kenta Kobashi was the biggest surprise this list will see. Grill me later, but I say number 7 should be none other than Mike Quackenbush. Call me crazy, but it fits. He has held over two dozen titles in his career. Feuds with wrestlers that are greater than half of the WWE wrestlers. He has come back to wrestling after having complex back surgery. And the fact that his finisher, the “Quackendriver 2” has yet to be kicked out of helps the point I am trying to make.
8. Bryan “The Dragon” Danielson. Enough said. Longest Ring of Honor title reign however brought to an abrupt halt by Homicide. A marvel on the mat. Defeated men like the current ECW champ C.M Punk, Lance Storm, Homicide at one time or another, Roderick Strong and Chris Hero. Leader of ROH in the ROH-CZW wars. Uses his own moves, but on many occasions, goes old-school with moves like the airplane spin and the chicken-wing. He is ROH’s biggest main-eventer and closes every night off right with his patented “Arms Across America” submission.
9. Samoa Joe. The one WWE would kill to have, and the one TNA would give up only over its dead body. Yeah, he’s that good. He is very much a high flyer, despite his 6’5” 300lbs build. Easily could be called the glue that is holding TNA together. Without him, they would flop……..and hard. He was on TNA for three years before he lost a match, in which he tapped out to Kurt Angle. 5 time X-Division champ. Trying to juggle ROH and TNA, I would expect he will get tired of not being on top and going to WWE. And I expect that in the very soon future. He just seems like the kind of guy who will not be happy until he is on the top looking down, and he will get to the top in WWE, but not in TNA. Some highlights of his career are that he was the first TNA superstar to be solo on the cover of a major wrestling magazine. Being undefeated for three years. There are many more accomplishments by this wrestler, and I expect there to be many more. He uses the Kokina Clutch submission as his finisher.
10. Yet another surprise. Matt Hardy gets the final spot in the top 10. Why? Because two years ago, Matt Hardy, much like his brother, just lost passion for the business. Then last year, much to the surprise of myself, the fans, and to Edge&Lita, the two of them are in the ring and nobody but Lita’s ex-boyfriend of 6 years, Matt Hardy, comes running into the ring and thrashing Edge. Matt continued that until Edge went to Mr. McMahon and demanded a ladder match in which the loser had to leave RAW and go to SmackDown. Not to the surprise of anyone, Matt loses the match and Matt goes to the Friday night show. BOOM! Something went off in Matt’s head and he kicked into a new gear. April 2007, Matt Hardy goes to RAW for one night and does the unthinkable. Matt, along with his brother Jeff Hardy defeated the World Tag Tam Champions Shawn Michaels and John Cena to become tag team champs. That title reign came to an end quick and in a hurry when in June 2007, Cade and Murdoch win the gold off of the Hardyz. Matt then went back into obscurity until he started feuding with the U.S champion Montel Vontavious Porter, MVP. While they were feuding, they were accidentally were put into a tag team championship match against the WWE tag team champs Deuce and Domino. What do you know? MVP covers Deuce to win the tag team gold. They are still tag champs to this day. Matt Hardy’s finisher is called The Twist O’Fate.
Now the reason it seems so dumbed down is because I wrote it for a school thing and now I want your opinions. So......opinions?
