On November 4th I went to a SmackDown!/ECW Supershow at Stockton Arena in Stockton, CA. This was my 7th WWE show (I've been to 2 Raw House Shows, 2 SmackDown House Shows, 1 Televised Raw, and 1 Pay-Per-View The Great American Bash, and now this one). I got to the arena about half an hour before the doors opened and I saw a few wrestlers get out of thier cars and walk into the arena. Batista was in the back of the line signing autographs, which is cool because I've heard he can be a jerk. I also saw Hornswoggle get out of his car. He needed a little help carrying his luggage. He was wearing jeans, a T-shirt, and some nice shades. So, before I knew it, they were letting people in the arena. When the lady was scanning my ticket, I guess it beeped wrong, so she had to actually tear it. (It was real because I ordered through the arena ticket box office).
The venue is generally small compared to some other arena's in Northen California: Oakland, San Franciso, San Jose, Sacremento, Bakersfield, Fresno etc... I bought the cheapest tickets ($20) and I was around mid-level in the arena. Before the show started, Justin Roberts rang the ring bell 10 times in respect for Fabulous Moolah.
I liked the idea of a SuperShow, and didn't know the matches until they announced them. Here is the match card:
-John Morrison vs. Tommy Dreamer
-Chuck Palumbo vs. Chavo Guerrero
-Shannon Moore vs. Mark Henry
-Victoria vs. Torrie Wilson (Special Guest Ref. Funaki)
-MVP vs. Kane
-The Miz vs. CM Punk
-Jimmy Wang Yang vs. Drew Mackentire
-Finlay & Great Khali vs. Rey Mysterio & Batista
Morrison was the first to come out and he got the heat anyone could have expected. He grabbed the mic and recited what he always says on ECW. Tommy Dreamer came out and got a pretty good pop. The match started with Morrison getting out of the ring and ducking under the ropes. Tommy was wearing a bandana and when it flew off, he showed a bald spot, around the size of a baseball. Tommy dominated most of the match, then Morrison did some kicks and fancy stuff. Typical match you would imagine. Morrison rolled up a quick pin and held the ropes. He got some heat as he went back. Dreamer was left out grabbing his neck and everyone showed respect and appluaded as he exited.
The ref's moved the steps so Palumbo could ride his bike out, pretty noisy and he got some pop. Chavo got a mixture of pop and heat (mostly because we have many hispanics in the area). This match got started out very slow and took a ton of time. Decent match, nothing at all special (sleeper match) and Chuck won with the Full Throttle.
Shannon Moore came out, he just got a little pop. Mark Henry got a lot of heat. Shannon surprisingly dominated the first few minutes. It went back and forth between Moore doing cruiser moves and Henry doing power moves. Moore went from corner to corner climbing the turnbuckles and jumping down to Henry. On the last corner he jumped and Henry caught him into a Bear Hug. Moore taps and Henry gets some more heat.
Justin Roberts tells us the next match has a special guest referee: Funaki (I actually thought for a second it was going to be either Stone Cold or Mick Foley). Funaki runs out. Victoria gets a pop, and Torrie gets a bigger one. A normal Diva match: hair-pulling, slapping, and throwing. It was funny when Torrie gave Victoria a huge wedgie (like pulled it out 3 feet!). Victoria rolled up a pin, and Torrie kicked out. So Torrie did the same to Victoria and won.
MVP entered with some huge heat. Kane got a great pop. The match lasted pretty long and MVP kept pretending to run away. He brought in a chair, but Kane booted him in the face. Some more slow wrestling and a few good slams from Kane. MVP then got in some good punches and kicks. Kane tried to lock in the ChokeSlam probably five times but MVP kept getting out of them. Finally, Kane slapped on the ChokeSlam and MVP low-blowed him. MVP got DQ'd and Kane turned around and ChokeSlamed him.
After intermission, Miz walked out with Extreme Expose'. He blah, blah, blahed and talked how he owned Kelly's contract and forced her to tell him how great he was. He said he had fame, fortune, women, and after tonight: the ECW title. CM Punk came out with a pretty big pop. Decent wrestling between the two. Miz held his own in the match. Punk did some high-risk moves including a suicide dive between the ropes. The match ended with Punk doing the G2S. Typical Punk match, great performance.
At first, I thought Roddy Piper was wrestling, but I was wrong. This Scottish guy named Drew Mackentire had the same exact music as Piper (for some reason). He talked about how bad the US was and how he was going to change it right now. e seemed like a really good heel and has serious potential. I am looking forward to seeing him in the future (probably got him from OVW)Of course, Jimmy Wang Yang comes hopping out and got an enormous pop. Drew wrestled a lot while Yang pulled a few fast moves here and there. Yang jumped off the turnbuckles a lot until he Drew pushed him off and did his finisher (not sure what) it was hard to tell. Nice match and am curious to see how WWE will use this new wrestler...
Main Event time rolled around and the announcer of course thanked everyone for showing up and how WWE was looking forward to come back "in the very near future". Finlay got heat and so did Khali. Rey got the 2nd biggest pop (mainly because of the demographics). He wore a wierd thing over his mask (it had flaps on the sides). Batista got the biggest pop of the night and just thundered the arena. Rey and Batista played "rock, paper, scissors to see who was going to start out the match. Rey won and Khali was up, but then he tagged Finlay. Pretty much what you expect from the four of them for about fifteen minutes then Hornswoggle pops out from under the ring and comes in the ring. Batista goes to Batista Bomb him, but Finlay hit him. Batista then kneeled down to Hornswoggle's level then Rey kicked Khali into the ropes and got tangled up. Rey and Batista picked up Hornswoggle and rammed him into Kahli (pretty funny). Rey did the 619 on Khali, then on Finlay and Hornswoggle. Batista did a spine-buster on Finlay and pinned for the win. Kahli's manager came in and Rey gave him a 619, too. Batista and Rey were in the ring for quite a bit longer just for the pop. When Batista climbed a turnbuckle, a crazy fan jumped into the ring and got ripped out by security. Rey spoke in Spanish for a few minutes and talked about how he was once World Heavyweight Champion, but wished the best of luck to Batista.
All in all, a good show. Not the best House Show, not the best, but I enjoyed it. I understood there wouldn't be a lot of top wrestlers like Undertaker or Edge because of injuries, but oh well. I had a lot of fun and am ready to go to another show right now. It wasn't sold out by long shot (most of the upper levels were empty).
I stayed in the arena a while after to look at what they had for sale. I didn't get anything, but I went back into the arena area and saw them taking down the ring:
