A little while ago, I made a post about Kane.
I made it the day "Kane" turned ten in WWE.
During that thread, I referred to Kane as a gimmick, and told of how he has outlasted every other gimmick in WWE history.
I posted a little fact, it made sense and it was true.
But you guys were having none of it!
How dare I attempt to discuss thing you all don't fully understand. You were right to bash me, after all, i used big words and made sense.. who the hell did i think i was?
Well.. you obviously didnt see me like that, and instead thought i was talking crap and comprehended me like i was an idiot.
Well.. Gather round as i make a half-hearted attempt to educate you in the basic differences between Characters and Gimmicks in the world of wrestling.
OK, Firstly... Lets choose some of our well-known characters...
Right, we have:
OK, That'll do.
Now, lets get our gimmicks...
Popular ones would be..
Right, I think we're all familiar with those people.
Right away the difference should be blatantly obvious.
But anyway..
Things that separate characters from gimmicks would be their personal traits.
For example...
Kane won't come out and talk on the mic for twenty minutes because he thinks he deserves a shot at the title.
Triple H will.
Edge wont come out, never say anything, bulldoze through his opponent at a rapid pace and leave.
Khali will.
Gimmicks tend to be two-dimensional people that appear on our screen and seem to be doing the exact same thing 24/7.
Umaga, for example, will never utter a word of english. he will always want to take out the guy thats across the ring from him. However, he can obey orders. He can comprehend some things that people say to him.
He has never changed. Those are his traits. That is how he is.
Randy Orton on the other hand.. Well he will nicely and pleasantly ask Hulk Hogan for a match to see who is the better man. However, he will also do what he needs to do to get to where he wants to be. But, we know his father. He discusses his past. He has good days and he has bad days.
Cryme Tyme are never upset. they are always happy. They are 24/7 seven criminals who pick-pocket everyone who passes by them.
Some gimmicks to evolve into characters. This actually happens a lot.
Triple H evolved from snobbish, rich man who assumed he was better than everyone else purely because his wallet was thicker, to a man that loves the wrestling industry and tries his hardest to regain the world title belt that means everything to him.
The Undertaker went from wanting to bury you alive, being accompanied by a paul bearer, making caskets and hanging out in graveyards to riding his motorcycle, getting upset with himself when he lost a match and hanging out with his wife.
However, whilst it doesnt happen often, characters sometimes evolve into gimmicks.
Booker T went from proud american who believed in doing the right thing and helping out people where possible, to being a narrow-minded man who felt he was royalty amongst a sea of "peasants" and spent his time with his queen discussing their combined greatness.
Now.. have i explained the basic differences between character and gimmick in the wrestling world to any extent to you guys at all?
