Now don't get me wrong, I'm just as happy as most wrestling fans with Benoit on ECW and a title program so obvious with him and Punk. However...
Does anybody remember when Carlito made his WWE/Smackdown debut?
In October of 2004, after many vignettes Carlito Carribean Cool debuts and in the hometown of the champion, he defeated John Cena for the United States Title. Let me remind you, he won the belt on his first match.
Now grant it Carlito was green in the beginning as a wrestler, mainly to WWE restricting some of his offense. He relied more on stealing the victory. But regardless he improved.
Fast forward to June of the following year and Carlito make an immediate impact upon being drafted. Once again making his debut, this time on Raw, and once again winning gold as he beat Shelton Benjamin for the Intercontinental Title.
Yes I know Benoit and Punk are some what seen as bigger stars, but there is no denying Carlito has always had great potential as a heel, and his mic work is stepping up once again to prove that.
My complaint or more so suggestion is, when Lashley was stripped of the belt, what they should have did is had the champion crowned in the 4 man tourney this past Tuesday. Once a champion was declared, I would have had Carlito make his ECW debut, challenging for and becoming the ECW World Champion.
Yes I know some of you are probably thinking twice about that, but let me remind you that ECW is run differently than Raw or Smackdown. Benoit is the top act not only because he's a great wrestler, but less empahsis is being paid to his mic work in the "C brand."
Punk is someone who is complete but still on other rosters he'd be like RVD. Not really favored as a leader of the brand, one of the top guys. But in ECW he can be.
I think if WWE was serious about pushing Carlito again and letting him return to what worked. Being a heel. ECW could have been a perfect niche for him.
Don't believe me, think about guys like Johnny Nitro who have a chance to revitalize their career.
But yea, let me know what you think. I wasn't suggesting Carlito have a lengthy reign, but WWE could however have followed the same formula they did in the past when putting gold on him.
