From 1998-2002, during HBK's four year absence from WWF/WWE, WWF programming made it quite evident that HBK had permanently retired, however, just wondering, for anyone who read the dirtsheets between '98 and '02, did the backstage sites ever infer that HBK might come back? Or was it just something out of the blue that he decided to do?
Basically what I'm asking is...did the backstage sites between '98 and '02 have even the slightest idea that he was planning on coming back, or did they too assume he was done?

He would've come back a lot earlier if he hadn't been such a primadonna in the back.

It had always been talked about since he retired. Michaels has a long and storied history of pretty much doing whatever he wants, faking injuries, exaggerating other problems, just to get his way. Hell, right up until the day of the show, he didn't want to drop the belt to Austin at Wrestlemania 14, he had to be physically threatened by Undertaker before he finally agreed.

I think there was talk in mid 2000 (when he reffed at Judgmentday) and sometime in 2001 to be apart of the invasion if The Rock couldn't be back in time.

I think HBK's personal life was in a very bad state during his time away from wrestling. He was addicted to drugs and at one point his wife nearly left him. It was only in 2002 when he found religion and became a born again christian did he get his life back on track and return to wwe.

He never really "retired" He was always around in some capacity, most notably his GM role on Raw. The longest he was gone from T.V. between 2000 and 2002 when he returned and joined the NWO. Then was the HHH and Micheals feud. We all knew it was just a matter of time before he came back to a wrestling role.

That incident with the Undertaker never happened, just a rumor that for some reason still exists despite being denied.

That incident with the Undertaker never happened, just a rumor that for some reason still exists despite being denied. No, it definitely happened, Undertaker talked about it in the past in shoot interviews and on off the record. It has all the traits of being a fake story: 1. Making out a guy to be bad (Shawn) 2. Making out a victim (Stone Cold) 3. A legit "bad ass" that would make a convincing argument (Undertaker) 4. A completely unreasonable request (not dropping the belt even though Shawn was injured) Ever since Tyson was hyped up at the Rumble and Shawn was injured, its CLEARLY obvious that he was dropping the belt, no ifs, ands, or buts. Basically, thats a story used to make Shawn look like a tyrant. (though he didn't need any help in 1997)

Bam Bam never complained when Afa stiffed his ass in a match. Besides, the "I'm never wrestling HBK EVER!" was like 2002. I'm sure The Rock has changed his mind since.

I never thought he'd be back.
I remember ordering Summerslam 2002 because of his comeback match. I hadn't even really watched it since early 2001 at that point. He was pretty much the reason I started watching it again at that point.

that's the off the record interview, but this is a response someone put to it:
When he says do the job its about Michaels last match when leaving, at Mania 14 with Austin, Michaels says in his book that he was a ba$tard to deal with at that time and its just a rumour that taker stood there telling him "to do business".
