I just upgraded to PS4 from Gamestop, they had a bundle for $399 that came with the console, Infamous Second Son, and a 3-month sub to PS+ and I also picked up MLB 2014 The Show. Not sure if this has anything to do with the Network being down but I am extremely put off by this install crap. I'm just trying to play an exhibition in The Show and everything has to be installed before I can even start a game and the install is slow as ; 14% after 20+ minutes. If this is how the process goes for every game I am going to be BEYOND PISSED. Every game has long install times on next-gen current gen. Disc based games are faster than straight up downloading though. The Show is a disc so I don't understand what the install is. There's no way around this?

There's no way around this? No. Mandatory game installs for both next-gen consoles. You can't run the game solely off of the disc, you install the content, the game discs are just a license when you have them in. The games run saved on the hardware.

It just caught me off guard and pissed me off as I didn't have a ton of time to play tonight and was not expecting an hour install time. What is your recommended procedure? Guess just install it before you're ready to play.

I usually just wait until it's ready because things get wacky when you don't. You can play another game if you already have one installed. Other than that you can't do much man. Some installs are absolutely brutal to the point where I have to keep my console on all night long. The 50 GB ones are a nightmare. But both consoles have the ability to pre-load, you can download the game, and have it ready and it gets unlocked on the date that the game releases. The installs are one of the biggest drawbacks to current gen consoles. Reason being is the disc drives/lasers can't keep up.

You get a brand new game, bring it home and are so excited to play then boom, 1 hour install time.

So I kind of impulse bought a PS4 off a guy cause it was $250 and I wanted to play MLB 14. I need some more game suggestions. One caveat I should say is I'm not big on shooters. The only shooter-type game I ever liked is Fallout 3/NV. My first love will always be Nintendo, I'm a big fan of Mario games and some of their other stuff. That being said, at some point I'll want to get some more games for it. Anybody have any suggestions for platformers or other games you think I'd like that are out or coming out for PS4?
On the topic of the Show's install time... I was dinking around with rosters and stuff on Franchise mode while it installed. Assuming there was stuff I couldn't access during it but didn't run into anything other than the player portraits loading.

If all goes according to plan, I hopefully will be the owner of a PS4 by the end of the night.
Had a PS1 and PS2, and then jumped to Xbox 360 last generation. Looking back, I kinda wish I hadn't. I can't wait to be back into the PlayStation camp.

After finishing up inFamous: Second Son, I traded it in with a few things to get The Last of Us. I have to say, I enjoy the ideas of the game and the story. But it is really taking me a while to get into it. I don't know, maybe I just need to sit down a little bit longer with it.

Do you need to pay for PSN to get updates for the PS4 games?

No. Patches or updates are free for all.

Picked up Diablo III the other night. Really enjoying it. Great looking game on top of being as fun as I remember Diablo 2 being.

Picked up a PS4 a couple of days ago.
I have to say, my experience with it thus far is absolutely superb. I love my Xbox One, but everything on the PS4 seems so much quicker. Getting in and out of menus, installing games, even my download speeds seem faster. I'll definitely actively use both, but I think I'm going to stick with the PS4 as my main console.

How much do the original 60gb PS3 goes for these days? I still have that one that I rarely play but thinking about buying a PS4 this week.

I think I may have found my answer by backreading this page of the thread, but just in case: Looking for some ideas as to what's up with my newly-purchased PS4. Here's what's happening:
-- Bought my kid a new PS4 with Lego Batman 3 & Minecraft (both discs) and a download of Little Big Planet 3. Both disc games worked fine until yesterday, when PS4 automatically tried to install a game software update to Lego Batman 3. -- Now when I try to load that game, the load screen sits there for upwards of 10-15 minutes, maybe longer, never fully loads the game, and when I try to back out, sometimes freezes the system entirely, including the controller. -- Upon forced reboot, I figured out that everything seems to work fine except for Lego Batman 3. Which was also working fine until this auto-install update. -- I am now trying to delete the game from the system and it's been deleting for like 20 minutes, still going. Not sure if I'm just being impatient or if this is unusual and I have a problem with the game and/or system.
Did I screw something up when I rebooted the first time the load screen stalled? If so, will a full delete/re-install solve my issue?
And am I being impatient? Never owned the last gen systems and this is my first go with a PS4. Is it just that the Batman update needed to take an hour and I didn't allow it to?
Thanks for any assistance. I'm clearly getting too old for this or I'd have figured it out already.

I think PSN has still been funky the last couple of weeks, so I'd suggest logging out of PSN then try loading the game. EA UFC tries to connect to online as soon as it loads so the last week or so, it would just sit at the loading screen forever. Logged out of PSN, loaded the game, and now that it wasnt trying to connect to online, worked like a charm. Beyond that, I'd suggest doing any available download as it could be related to that as well.

Yeah, I was aware of the PSN issues, as it was a good 3-4 days after my son opened the gift before we could even set up his online account. I ended up deleting the Lego Batman 3 software (took FOREVER... and then the PS4 hung up on the rest mode screen and I had to force it to power down completely). Re-installed it and it's been fine since. I think I just got a partial update (possibly my fault for not waiting long enough) that screwed things up the first time. Thanks for replying.
