Tonight marks the returns of Leno, Letterman, Conan, Kimmel, and Ferguson. The Daily Show and the Colbert Report return this coming Monday.
Dave and Craig will have their writers, as they are owned by Worldwide Pants and not CBS. Apparently, Dave directly struck a deal with the WGA.
Conan, Leno, Jimmy, Jon, and Colbert will have to wing it.
This period will be make-or-break for the writerless hosts, particularly Conan, who inherits the Tonight Show next year.
The advantages that the Pants has is that with their writers back, Dave and Craig's shows will be exactly as they were, Top 10 list, gags, A-list guests, and all.
The non-written shows will really only have one advantage: with shorter monologues and less written gags, they'll have more time to dedicate to the guests. The only trouble is that the A-listers are reluctant to cross the picket line.
I personally think that Conan, due to his former status as an SNL writer, can pull it off. Jon and Colbert will have it a little tougher, but due to the nature of their shows (which involve spinning humor out of current news events), the jokes can usually write themselves. Plus, depending on the guest, they can always dedicate more time...I've seen them spend almost an entire show on the guest before.
As for Jay and Jimmy...well, I'm probably in the minority here, but I never really found them funny, even with writers. Jimmy Kimmel hasn't made me emit so much as a chuckle since he left Win Ben Stein's Money, and Jay is just...Jay.
Anyway, discuss.

I've been waiting for this night for so long, the Cone Zone is back. 8) I laugh just at his facial expressions, and he's a writer himself, so it'll be just as funny as it always was.
And I gotta watch Letterman for Juno's Ellen Page.

I may tune in for the hell of it. I rarely watch Late night shows though.

Even though the shows may be downright horrible, I'll still watch Leno/Conan and maybe Kimmel. I can't stand Letterman.

I think the one who could pull it off the best is Craig Ferguson, since much of the material in each of his monologues was improvised anyway. But I guess it doesn't really matter since he's got his writers.
I think Conan, Jimmy and Jay are in serious trouble.

And I gotta watch Letterman for Juno's Ellen Page. Ellen Page fan, aye? Watch the movie "Hard Candy" - the first movie (besides the X-Men flick she was in) that I saw her in. She'll be a hell of a star in the future. I can honestly say I'm looking forward to what these shows will be like tonight, especially Leno and Conan.

Leno's doing pretty good, sounds a lot like his regular monologue.

Leno's doing pretty good, sounds a lot like his regular monologue. What did you think that was actually written by writers? Colbert and Stewart can't even write their own shows is what will suck for them, both are WGA members. Conan will probably to well, it's not like he didn't already do uncredited writing on his show. Leno probably won't be good at all, which isn't unusual.

Yeah, I only caught the end of Letterman to see the Lupe performance and then he came on the stage and I was highly confused. And now Conan...strange to see.

Ring-spinning? Max playing for an hour? Jeff playing the bongos?
Conan's got this time-killing thing down.
