The Byrds, they're phenomenal
Love is another great band from the sixties.
Parliament/Funkadelic are amazing.

This was supposed to be a CCR appreciation thread, but that is for another day and time itself.

To me, it's an odd question. Most of the truly great songwriters in American history, are solo artists, as it was pretty much the standard. Occasionally they had backing bands that included names (such as Buddy Holly and the Crickets), but typically, the genuinely great musicians were solo artists. Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Buck Owens, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, B. B. King, Bob Dylan, Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, all could've been genuinely incredible band-leaders, but primarily stuck to solo careers, with backing bands/studio musicians. I guess... it, I'll go with R.E.M. Consistently excellent.
