If you're talking about the four films from the 90's and Batman Begins/The Dark Knight, I've often wondered the same thing.
I always thought Batman Begins was a prequel to those four, however, the more I talk to people about it, I believe they are totally different series. Batman Begins/The Dark Knight have no ties to the Batman movies from the 90's, they are their own story, staying more closely with the comic series.
I'm sure someone can clear this up for the both of us.

-Batman -Batman Return's
Those are Tim Burton's, and follow each other.
Batman Forever, and Batman and Robin don't follow any movie, I don't think.
The new series is:
-Batman Begins -The Dark Knight
They are not all connected. Only Burton's two follow each other as one series, and Batman Begins and TDK are the second "Series". Begins was a fresh start.

Ok, that makes sense. I had no idea Forever/Batman & Robin weren't connected to the first two, though. I just figured they followed one another, but its been years since I've seen any of them.

My mistake, I didn't mean to put Batman Returns grouped with Forever and Batman and Robin. So the ones that don't follow any series are: Batman Forever Batman and Robin

When Chase Meredian (Nicole Kidman) asks Batman if she should be wearing leather and carrying a whip? There are two seperate Batman motion picture sagas: Batman (1989) Batman Returns Batman Forever Batman & Robin Batman Begins The Dark Knight

From what I remember, even 'Batman and Robin' referenced earlier films.
'Batman Begins' is to the Batman series as 'Casino Royale' was for the Bond series.

Batman Begins was the earliest of the movies. Then next is the Dark Night, which is basically a remake of the old Batman movie with Jack Nicholson staring as the Joker.

Batman (1989) Batman Returns Batman Forever Batman & Robin Batman Begins The Dark Knight That's always how I thought of it. Begins was a complete overhaul, separate from the other four mentioned above.
