Spidey joined the avengers. A previously unmentioned friend from High School turned up and got turned into the Molten Man 2. He burnt down Aunt May's House and Peter's apartment. Spidey moved into the Avengers tower. Spider-Man died. Spider-Man came back to life and had new powers such as stronger, better spidersense, wolverinesque popping claws (all of which everyone apart from PAD has forgotten about). Iron Man gave Spidey the Iron-Spidey Armour. Iron Man guilted Spidey into unmasking during Civil War. Peter got all angsty. Clor (Thor + Clone = Clor) blew a hole through Black Goliath. Spidey changed sides. Spidey's side lost. Spidey, MJ and May went on the run. May got shot. Spidey threw a jeep at the shooter. Peter put the black costume on. He kicked Kingpin's ass for ordering the hit.

Well right now we are at the end of JMS run. He's doing an "Event" called One More Day that will run through:
September's Spider-Man #544 and Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #24, October's Sensational Spider-Man #41 and November's Amazing Spider-Man #545.
That ties up everything from his run and sets the staff for Brand New Day where all Spider-Man titles are cancelled except for Amazing, which is going to come out 3 times a month.
Dan Slott and Steve McNiven, Bob Gale and Phil Jiminez, Marc Guggenheim and Salvador Larroca, and Zeb Wells and Chris Bachalo are the creative teams for the first few arcs of the book, taking turns and working together to create a big Spider-Man arc.
So really if you don't care for JMS, if you have the money jumping onto Brand New Day is your best bet as it's a fresh start and is packed with talent.

Brand New Day sounds like the money move for me. Fresh start & easy to follow with just Amazing to buy. which issue had the kingpin? i would pick that up just from what all of you described.

Amazing Spider-Man #542
All you need to know before reading that issue is that when Peter revealed his secret to the world, Kingpin ordered a hit on him and his family and May was shot.

He does but it's hinted he might loose those for Brand New Day. Brand New Day should begin in Amazing Spider-Man #546 in Decemeber... but there have been reported delays with the last story arc (One More Day) so it could get pushed back.
