It is not all new music man, there are some mad good bands out there backed by a lot of talent such as Incubus. Then again there are bands out there like Fall Out Boy that are not really about solos or showing musicianship. Their about being catchy, popular, and fun. And in a lot of cases they are more successful.

Well, guitar solos are pretty much the only thing that really matter about music, anyway.

There is just as much bullcrap and generic songs in the 60s and 70s as there is today, it's just that the stuff that mattered stuck around, and the rest of the bullcrap faded into obscurity. There are plenty of fantastic bands today.

Most music today sounds way too digital and synthetic. It's like I'm listening to what plastic instruments would sound like.
Also, most of it is corporate bullcrap, a lot of the bands that made music in the 60's and 70's would never hit the mainstream today. How often does a controversial song hit the airwaves anymore?

So if you don't like it...don't listen to it.
If you can't help it, jam a pencil in your ear and deafen yourself.

Music is constantly evolving, you say now that the classics are the best, but who's to say that in another 20-30 years, people will be hailing the likes of 50 Cent and Simple Plan as some of the greatest bands in the world?!

Hell if you lived through the 90s or at least kinda grew up through them anyways you have to see the huge difference between Rock then and Rock now.

Hell if you lived through the 90s or at least kinda grew up through them anyways you have to see the huge difference between Rock then and Rock now. Totally agree. It'll never be the same, but like I said, that's because it's constantly evolving. If artists didn't try new and different things, the whole music industry would be a bore.

Of course music has changed. The world has evolved, media has evolved.

There are still bands like Zeppelin around, you just have to look harder at the indy scene.
Whilst the '90s are my favorite era in music, I find that a lot of current bands catch my eye. I don't listen to the radio so songs don't get replayed too much and get annoying. I do like Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco, but that's just me.

I do like Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco, but that's just me. I like Panic too, their new album has a very "classic" feel to it.

Sometimes I feel the same way about rap. Nowadays, it's all materialistic...rappers talk about their house, their cars, their bitches, their bling...30 years ago, the Sugar Hill Gang's Big Bank Hank would brag about...owning a color TV, so he could see the Knicks play basketball.

I wouldn't fret that much. I mean, I agree most music that gets mainstream rotation, be it MTV, Radio, BET, VH1, etc... is pretty much garbage. But here are two things you gotta remember...
1. There are still great artists out there, granted not necessarily on the radio or video networks. Obviously it depends on your taste in music, but look at rappers such as Immortal Technique, Talib Kweli, Sage Francis, Salim from Salim and the Music Lovers, as well as bands like Opeth, Megadeth, Machine Head, and so on. And that's just covering, generally, two genres. There's still a lot of great stuff out there, you just have to look for it.
2. Like anything creative, music is cyclical. In the late 60s there was a renaissance of sorts with bands like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, as well as artists like Jimi Hendrix and many others who really set things in motion. That was followed by the 70s with your Pink Floyds, AC/DCs, Black Sabbaths, Led Zeppelins, and so on. Then the 80s hit and the mainstream music, mostly, sucked horribly. Bands like Motley Crue and so on completely dominated the mainstream. However meanwhile, under the radar, were bands like Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament, Metallica, Exodus, Slayer, as well as rap getting it's initial start. Then in the 90s music picked up again with Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, as well as rap really hitting it's stride with Pac, Bone Thugs, Biggie, Onyx, Snoop Dogg, and so on. So really now we're just in virtually the same position that we were in the 80s, a creative drought that's led to a lot of mediocre and often times downright awful bands getting famous because of marketability. And really, the same thing goes for rap as well.
I guess my point is, just wait it out. Eventually someone will come up with something that will change the whole industry once again and revitalize it.
