I've decided for my birthday I'm going to do a major rebuild of my computer. Basically, I'm upgrading the motherboard and putting it in a new case, then cannibalizing the old computer for parts. When the dust settles, I should have a machine that runs something like 2.9 ghz, 512 mb ram, 320 gb hard drive, and XP Pro. Anyone here ever upgrade a motherboard? Any problems I should look out for?

If you're just updating your motherboard you have to make sure it's the same Socket as your previous one. That's if you're not replacing your processor. If you're just switching your RAM to the new motherboard, make sure it's the same frequency as your old one too. and 512MB isn't enough man, juice it up to at least a gig

The moment of truth is upon is. The new motherboard has been installed in the new case, it's been powered up and beeps contentedly. The power supply is humming and the cpu fan is turning. Microsoft has been consulted about possible issues with Windows. Now we shall see if this works or not.
I am the man. Got the new motherboard plugged in and hooked up. Windows required me to activate it again, but had no problems whatsoever doing that. Easy, breezy upgrade.

Now my question is why the do you want/need a 320 gb hard drive? I'd assume video and audio. I have like 48GB in music alone. I backup every CD I buy onto my computer. I also have entire football games saved on my computer, each of which run between 200mb and 1gb. You can see how it would add up.
