We are a hard rock/metal band and we are doing two cover songs for our album (one of them being We Care A Lot by Faith No More) . And by the way, do you have to pay royalty to the band that you cover?

My pick from that list is obviously "STP" by Sublime. But unless you're a drug addict, I don't see the emotional attachment to the song.
Also, the song that every punk band covers and rightfully should....
"We're Only Gonna Die" Bad Religion.
Alot of those songs seem random...
I mean, seeing "One Love" and "Complete Destruction" on the same album would seem awkward.

Well. Walk has been covered more times than God himself can count so no. And if your singer can get down "It's the end of the world..." then yes. Do it. Edit: Yeah, if you're going to put it on an album then I'm pretty sure you have to have permission. Especially if you're sampling. But either way I'd check it out first.

Since I doubt you have a record deal, you wouldnt really need permission.

Geddy can barely sing Tom Sawyer anymore.
You should definitely do a cover of The Final Countdown

N.O.D. or Three Suns and One Star. Don't put covers on your album because of lack of originals. Never do that.

That would be Helios, aka not Ricochet. As for a song to cover, do "Mother" by Danzig. You can't go wrong with Danzig. The man kicks so much ass. -CMD

It depends on what songs your band can play well and possibly rework into something interesting. I think the two best songs listed there are "Immigrant Song" and "No Woman, No Cry," but I don't know if they are the two that your band would be best off covering.
Experiment with a bunch of them and see what works out.
By the way, you do not need to ask permission to cover a song, but if you are putting it out to profit from it, either as a pay-download or an a CD, you need to pay royalties. The best thing to do if you're an unsigned band is to leave cover tunes off of albums, unless you are giving the albums away for free as a promotional tool. In that situation, you wouldn't need to pay royalties.

What i'm trying to say is....a million bands in my area cover songs on small labels and never pay royalties. I mean, there are so many small bands who sell their CDs, that I doubt you would ever be met with any legal action from the band.
But yeah, most bands only cover songs live because of this.

I voted for Caught in a Mosh by Anthrax. Just for old time's sake. Although, if your band does a particularly awesome job on one of the other songs, always go with the better quality track.
If people plunk down $10 for your CD, do your best to make sure they like what they hear (and therefore, are more likely to pay $10 for the next one). Your favorite song might not be the one you play the best.
On the royalties issue, there is a pretty popular band where I once lived... they had a tremendous stage presence, playing an even mix of fun originals and covers. They sold CDs with their originals for $10 each, and they put free MP3 downloads of their cover songs on their web site, as a way of letting their strongest cover songs promote them without directly making a dime off of the song itself.

I think you should do "It's A Long Way Back From Hell" by Danzig... it just strikes me as the right song to do.
It's funny... I just started a poll on my MySpace regarding which song I should sing for my American Idol audition later this year... and then I see this... I should have done a poll on here.

Since I doubt you have a record deal, you wouldnt really need permission. you need permission regardless. "Permission" will cost money b/c you have to buy the rights for each use.My band is not signed and have recorded covers. We CANNOT sell them because they're not our songs. We do some Alter Bridge stuff and our guarists cousin is a manager of theirs, so we're working on getting the rights to release covers for a cd of Alter Bridge but it's too soon after the release of Blackbird, since we cover songs off of that. so you cannot record covers for a cd if you're selling it. Better get to writing originals...
