Depends, if you have Windows XP you'll need to go into network connections and create a new connection using your username and password and in a similar fashion to dial up you'll need to use this to connect. This is assuming that your DSL provider doesn't have PPPoE setup within the modem that you're using. you will definitely have to do something.
If you have the modem now, or when you get it, do this.
Open the control panel, make sure it's in classic view, double click on network connections and on the left you'll see 'Create a New Connection' or somewhere on the screen will be the new connection wizard.
Click on that, hit next off the first screen, choose connect to the internet, choose setup my connection manually, choose connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password, put in whatever you want for the DSL name, put in your username and password as provided by your ISP and on the last screen check 'add a shortcut to my desktop'.
That will create a connection and obviously put a shortcut on the desktop. I used to do tech support for DSL.

Thanks in advance Ugh! Cable is so far superior to DSL. I highly recommendy fiber optics, if its available in your area. $34.95 and about 20X faster than Cable. Its awesome!

I love my DSL since upgrading to their 'Ultra' service. It's a five and a half meg connection and there isn't a bandwidth cap like the only cable internet service provider in town.
