First of all, Wrestling doesn't make people as rich as one might think. He may be making a couple hundred thousand a year, but he also has to pay for his own transportation from city to city via plane as well as rental cars. Add that up in a year where they travel to a MINIMUM 52 cities a year (just for RAW broadcasts alone). Once you add up transportation, a salary of a couple hundred thousand a year doesn't make you as "secure" as you'd think.
Secondly, JR is no longer in an office position. When he was, he was a salaried EMPLOYEE of WWE. once he became just talent, he became an independent contractor just like the rest of the boys. When you're an independent contractor, then yes, you can tell your "client" what you will and won't do. Vince is JR's client. Ask Vinnie to supply health insurance and do the taxes for everyone on the roster and he'll quickly tell you no because his roster are not employees, just independent contractors. Therefore, since Vince likes the term independent contractor, then that means he is a client of JR's services.
Let me put it in a manner you can relate to.
You need your porch fixed. You find several contractors that can do the work that you want. You hire a contractor to do the work and he comes out and tells you what he will and won't do for the amount of money the job costs. He is providing a service for you and you are his customer. That is what an independent contractor is. Someone who provides his services for a fee.
Vince wanted JR's commentating services. JR told him how much it would cost Vince to have him call RAW every week. Vince agreed and RAW was the show JR agreed to provide his services to. Now that Vince has changed the terms of their arrangement, JR could legally quit and Vince couldn't punish him for it. JR agreed to provide services for RAW. Over the years, he's been very vocal and public about not wanting to change his lifestyle and his work schedule to tape Smackdown. Why is everyone so "shocked" that he is upset about the situation?
Vince is a client, not the boss. If you work in Stamford in WWE Headquarters, then Vince is your boss. As independent contractors, Vince is only a client paying for services rendered.
