So I got a tattoo on Sunday and when I got it, it hurt...hurt like hell now its Thursday and its still sore as hell and it itches like crazy I can't even sleep cuz' of it. Iv washed it once a day with anti-bactirial soap and I keep coco butter lotion on it. This isn't the first tattoo iv gotten the other one didn't bother me this much this b*tch stays itching and is really red and sore.
How exactly would I know if it was infected?

Try not to itch it so much. Try gently rubbing it. The same thing happened to my second tattoo. It itched for like 2 weeks straight. I just kept putting lotion on it, and it worked. It'll go away eventually.

For the first 5 days I applied Aquaphor medication to my tattoos (enough to keep it moist, but not to much to where it couldn't breathe.
I also washed my tattoos 4-6 times a day with fragrance free CVS Pharmacy (it's basically Dial) soap the WHOLE time it was healing.
After the first 5 days, I used fragrance free Lubriderm lotion on it for about a week, applying it around 4-6 times a day.
Keep your tattoo clean, keep your hands clean, and avoid sleeping on it, if you have clothing rubbing against it, that's also going to irritate it and make it itch worse. If you are THAT concerned, see a doctor, or go back to the shop you had it done at and have them take a look at it.

Yeah I would recommend going to see like a pharmacy and get it checked out, buy what you may need and just wait. Time is key. Tattoos that have just been inked are often red and irritated. They also occasionally bleed, ooze ink or scab over. This is normal. But if your tattoo oozes a greenish pus, remains red for weeks afterward, or is hot and swelling, your skin may have an infection. Consult the tattoo artist. The first step in treating an infection is to go directly back to the parlor and show your tattoo to the artist who inked it. Most tattoo artists have been trained to look for infection and have seen hundreds of infections firsthand. In the majority of instances, they will be able to easily confirm or reject the notion that your tattoo is infected. Make an appointment with your doctor. After revisiting the parlor, head to the clinic. Your primary physician will be able to diagnose a skin infection and give you the proper tools for treatment. He or she may prescribe an antibiotic, as this is the most common way to treat skin infected from tattoos. A doctor may also order blood tests, depending on the circumstances under which you received the tattoo. se a topical ointment such as Bacitracin, A&D Ointment or Neosporin on the site if you have confirmed that it is infected. Do not use a topical cream as a preventative. This will only clog the skin and cause an infection. Again, use a topical antibiotic only if you are absolutely sure the tattoo is already infected. reat an infected tattoo by keeping it dry at all times. Water is the biggest enemy of your tattoo as it heals. Don't swim with an infection, and do your best to avoid the area altogether when you take a shower.
I hope this helped.

You're irritating the area too much. There's a small chance your skin may be allergic to whatever ink was used (it happens, I'm allergic to red shades of a certain company for some reason), but it's most likely you bothering it too much. Whoever recommended you put cocoa butter on it should be shot. DIAL or Anti-Bacterial soap...and Bacatracin.

Sigh. One of these days we're gonna get a member who's an actual medical doctor. Sigh. One of these days we're gonna get a member who's an actual financial consultant. Sigh. One of these days you two both will realize this: Anyway, just see if not itching it works, and if it continues till Monday, a week, see an actual medical doctor.

Wash it like twice a day, more then that irritates and dries it. Coco butter lotion is a no-no for healing tats, use Aquaphor. Thats the best stuff out, and if you used that from the beginning it would almost be healed already. Dont itch it, tickle it with a napkin or something, or tap it gently with your finger. It should be fine by next week. Definitely stop using that lotion asap and keep it moist.

i work at a tattoo shop if it helps...
buy Bacitracin, and apply just a little bit, 2 times a day, so its on the tattoo but at the same time, its kinda dry so the tattoo can breath, on the shower you can use dial soup, make foam out of it, and then massage it with your hand...
keep it clean bro and it should be fine

[/quote] No, I'm not nuts. For two days I was on a Greyhound around a bunch of other dirty ass people, on a bus that was probably dirty as hell to boot. I washed as often as we stopped for a few minutes on a break, as recommended by the guy who did the tattoo. After each time I washed it, I applied a thin layer of Aquaphor so it WOULDN'T dry out. Then, when I got home I was around a 5 year old, who is notorious for getting me sick from being around other kids and carrying their germs everywhere. I took no chances man, lol. I guess I should have added in those bits and pieces, my bad! -Anyone ever heard of the After Inked product? Supposed to heal tattoos in like, 3-5 days.
