When the Packers hired Mike McCarthy coming off of a year when he led the 49ers to the 32nd rated offensive attack, I thought it was the most absurd head coaching hire I had ever seen. What I learned since than is that certain on-field results only account for so much, and just like the players, some coaches just need an opportunity. And I learned that myself and all other fans ultimately don't know dick about what being a football coach is really all about.

So Buffalo hired Doug Marrone, and it seems the majority of Bills fans are idiots for saying "he's only 25-25 what a failure should have hired lovie smith". Apparently these knuckleknobs don't realize that Marrone took over a lousy, inherently talent-lacking Syracuse program that had just suffered through 1-10, 4-8, 2-10, and 3-9 seasons under it's previous coach, and he lead them back to respectability and two bowl victories. Nick Saban turned 3 programs around (Michigan St, LSU, Alabama) winning possibly 4 National Titles, yet completely laid an egg in the NFL. Its two totally different ballgames. If you've got a chance to get Lovie Smith, you get Lovie Smith. And Bill Walsh (a guy you've probably heard of) was an NFL assistant who was successful in college and then went on to have a fairly decent NFL coaching career. Point is, a lot of the criticism of the Marrone hire seems unwarranted. If you prefer somebody with NFL head coaching experience, that's fine. But citing his .500 record in this instance is missing the forrest for the trees.

Big difference between being a good coach at the college level and a good coach at the pro level. Tons of guys can't make the transition. He has coached in the NFL for 8 seasons.

Well, Dickey to Toronto is apparently official pending a contract extension. BJ's extend Dickey.

I've noticed a lot of you guys are misspelling my name on your list. That's M A C R E A D Y.... MacReady, I know it can get a bit confusing; but I see some of you guys spelling it like "Willbuh" or "OTE".... those are just completely off base. ;-) yeah and they keep adding "III Tears" to the end of my name, as though I support Casey Anthony or something.

So apparently Toronto is deep in discussions about acquiring Dickey. I think it would actually be a good deal by Toronto to trade Travis d'Arnaud if that's what it takes to get Dickey. d'Arnaud is obviously a stud, but Toronto is in win-now mode and at the end of the day d'Arnaud is unproven and could very well end up being a Wieters type who is good but not in the Posey/Mauer/Molina camp of offensive production. Plus they already have Arencebia who may hack away but is young, cheap, and gives you a ton of power. I say go for it Toronto. The Mets will probably screw up the prospects anyhow.

Dodgers sign Hyun-Jin for 6 years/$36 mil.
According to Yahoo's Jeff Passan, the Dodgers payroll is now higher than the GDP of at least four countries.

David Wiess @wiessd Sources: @dodgers & Mariners are talking about a trade that would bring Felix Hernandez to LA; Zach Lee would be included in the deal.

I'm somewhat excited about signing Upton, because it was a hefty price tag, but less than Bourne would have cost, and honestly, in 5 years I think Upton will be more productive than Bourne will be. The Braves have no other options for CF, so they definitely overpaid to fill what would have been a huge void. I'm more worried because when we rarely open the checkbook now, it hasn't panned out that great, like with Uggla. But they still desperately still need someone who can hit a high average and someone with some power. I doubt we will get either because we just blew our wad. But I don't know what else we could have done. Most expensive BJ ever.

The Mariners weren't awful either, and they are going to improve offensively by brining the fences in a bit.

I think the Red Sox could be in the cellar as they are basically still rebuilding, but the Yankees will be about the same as usual. The Rays have a pathetic offense and won't win more than 90 games. The Orioles are no proven thing. Blue Jays are a wild card, who knows if what failed in Miami (albeit in a small sample size) will work for them.
