Newcastle United have announced that Joe Kinnear will take up the post of interim manager at St James' Park.
The former Wimbledon, Luton Town and Nottingham Forest manager will fill the role at the troubled north-east side until owner Mike Ashley completes the sale of the club.
Newcastle have been without a manager since Kevin Keegan quit at the beginning of September. The Nigerian consortium that is hoping to buy Newcastle has pledged to bring Keegan back if they take over on Tyneside.
A statement on the club's official website reads: "Newcastle United have today appointed Joe Kinnear as manager on a short-term contract.
"The vastly-experienced Kinnear has agreed to take temporary charge of first team affairs at St James' Park until the end of October."
Kinnear added in the statement: "I am very excited about the challenge in front of me at Newcastle United.
"Results have not been great of late, but there is a lot of quality in the squad and I am very confident the players are capable of climbing the league table.
"Newcastle United is a great club. When I was in charge of Wimbledon I always remember the passion of the fans up there and how great a stadium St. James' Park is.
"It is a big challenge but one I am really looking forward to."
Kinnear had a successful career as a player, appearing over 200 times for Tottenham during his decade at the club from 1965-75.
However, he is more well-known as a manager after taking over at Wimbledon in 1992 and keeping the small London side in the Premier League for seven years.
In 1999, his health forced him to leave the club following a heart attack, and the Dons were relegated the following season under Egil Olsen.
