Just curious cause I was a bit younger when watching this PPV, what was the big deal about Sting winning the main event. I remember someone referring to the main event as "the biggest letdown." Just curious.

Sting and Hogan finally met at Starrcade for the WCW World Championship, with Sting winning controversially due to a decision by special guest referee Bret Hart when he reversed the decision made by referee Nick Patrick after Hogan pinned Sting after what he believed to be a "fast count." The match was restarted and Sting made Hogan submit to the Scorpion Deathlock. It was heavily rumored that Sting was supposed to get a "clean" victory in the match, but in the days leading up to the match, Terry Bollea (Hogan), invoking his "creative control" clause in his contract, changed his stance on the outcome from a "clean" finish to a tainted finish that didn't weaken his character. The compromise ended up being the controversial ending of the match.

Add to that the fact that the count was NOT fast, and Hogan dominated the match... A tainted victory would have been bad enough, but to have the year long buildup just completely destroyed like that was really sad.

It was pretty much Nick Patrick's fault. How can somebody not fast count?

From what ive heard, Hogan was unimpressed with Sting. He had 12 months of build up for this huge match and he came in with no tan and looked a little out of shape so Hogan went to Patrick and got the fast count to nixed.

Agreed and Sting getting stripped of the Title on Thunder just ruined the Sting bandwagon to be honest, and thats why WCW went under, Hogan and the Veterans having the company wrapped around their finger, Hogan lost clean to Goldberg cause he knew damn well WCW was going to start going on a downfall.

Meh it really has little to do with the match itself being a letdown. But I always hated that they had Bret Hart come in as a referee. He was ref for the Bischoff/Zbyszko match then he out of no where and beat on Nick and then became the ref for the restart or whatever. The match was just such a bust.
And having Bret as a referee, in his first WCW PPV, the biggest PPV of the company...was just stupid. I guess it was just a sign of things to come for him.
