The Starrcade '97 Thread got me to thinking about this...
As disappointing as Hogan's powertrip made the ending to the Sting/Hogan match at Starrcade, you have to admit that the storyline leading up to that match was absolutely historic. It was epic. It is the greatest storyline WCW ever did and it is one of the (if not the) greatest storylines in wrestling.
The fake, NWO Sting; War Games; Sting's declaration of himself being a "free-agent"; the evolution into the Crow character; the week after week spottings of Sting in the rafters; Sting beginning to attack the NWO after repelling from the rafters; all of this leading to one epic night where good was set to face evil. It was absolutely brilliant.
Hogan completely killed the ending for everyone by not wanting Sting to go over clean, but despite that, the set up was beautiful. A great story told by people that weren't exactly known for wonderful story telling. Wrestling is just not into putting over a year into building up a match anymore (there are a couple of exceptions, but things like this just do not happen very often).
Anyway, to keep this going...what are your thoughts on this storyline/set-up? And do you think they should go for more long-running storylines or keep it to the mostly month-by-month stuff and sometimes get into three and four months with some characters?

Oh, the storyline was great...
That's what makes me so angry about the match.

No doubt in my mind it was clearly the best fued of its time in WCW. I gotta say while WCW was still around that night was a pretty historic night overall. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't that the night bischoff challenged Vince McMahon to a match?

The challenge was when they were losing to Raw so they were pulling anything out of their asses for ratings. in 96-97 they were still handily beating Raw.

Hogan didn't want to job because Sting wasn't in the right shape after not wrestling for 13 or so months.

the story was a box office dream-the buyrate for Starrcade 97 reflects this..... but the finish and Hogans moaning of course ruined a truly epic wrestling moment and one of the top dream matches.
WCW creative cannot be faulted for their patience in this buildup....it was excellent

The match had nothing to do with WCW folding, at the time of that match/fued, WCW was already far ahead of WWF in the ratings, and then even another year after that. From 96-98 WCW were ahead in the ratings. That being said, the story was perfect and the ending was fine. The nWo storyline and everything behind it was what kept the ball rolling in WCW.

It is without a doubt my favorite time period in Pro wrestling, and the most exciting also. I remember being literally on the edge of my seat watching Nitro in 1997...wrestling doesnt do that these days.

But after that they started declining. I am not saying that one night was the sole reason for them folding, but I do think it had something to do with it, definitely.

The build-up to this match was fantastic. But the screwy finish was timed pretty poorly because I think this PPV got the biggest buyrate in WCW history.
What was possibly even worse was the year after where Nash beat Goldberg to win the title. This just destroyed all of Goldberg's momentum. Plus the fact that Nash laid down for Hogan like a month later.
