At the time, Bret Hart was my favorite wrestler. I hated Shawn Michaels. I was so happy when Bret won, and then Gorilla restarted the match in overtime and I just couldn't watch the end of it, I was so pissed. I knew Michaels would get the belt.
Looking back now, it was the right move to give the title to Michaels. I can't imagine how different it would be if Bret kept the belt.

My top two all-time favorites. And though Bret is number one for me; it only made sense to give the belt to Shawn since they built him up so much with the whole "Boyhood Dream" stuff.
If Bret would have retained then I could have seen perhaps a rematch at SummerSlam or something. Why wouldn't the company had changed if Bret didn't drop? Shawn really didn't bring anything "cutting edge" at that point as far as what he would later be doing a year later. Granted he may have been at his best performance wise; from a company stand point I see little change.
That title change would ultimately lead to Bret's time off and for his under rated feud with Steve Austin.

Michaels def deserved it but he cheapened it my telling Bret get the f**k out of my ring. no class.

For one it's common curtisy to give the winner the ring expecally in that instance. Watch other winners of the belt at WM, the loser always gets the out of ring. It's their time to enjoy the moment. Sure it would have been nice since Bret wasn't the heel to shake hands but Bret should have expected. Do you think he had Flair hanging out in the ring when he won his first title? No

If Bret would have won the company wouldnt have changed at all. People need to realize from WM12 to WM13 Shawn Michaels accomplished NOTHING to change the face of pro wrestling

How about make it a hellva lot more entertaining. Bret bores the crap out of me. Shawn's bumps and high flying matches with Mankind, Syd, and and so many others that year were more entertianing than Bret's reign the previous year. I mean Yoko and Lugar, pfft not even a comparison. Only fueds that year I liked of Bret's were with Owen and Nash. Compare Nash's bouts with HBK and Bret. Bret's were good but I prefer HBK's wm 11 bout, when Shawn went babyface. PS Nash can't work

If Bret were to retain the title he would have went on to face Mankind, Sid and whoever else HBK faced. Some people would have been more entertained with Bret some with HBK. Thats not the question. The question would the company have any change and simply no it wouldnt because Steve Austin and The Rock are the ones that changed the company. Bret and Shawn had nothing to do with it. The ONLY change that might have happened would be Austin would be the World champion sooner since he feuded with Bret in late 96

I was totally pulling for HBK. I was a huge mark for Michaels in the mid to late nineties. I was excited the next night on Raw when I found out he won.

I felt the same exact way..... I remember being SOOOOO pissed that Bret was forced to continue the match..... Shawn couldn't get the job done in an hour and there shouldn't have been an overtime....
