Hey,
I just saw the picture of the upcoming fight card for UFC #94 St. Pierre vs. Penn 2 and it got me wondering about the UFC championship belts.
Now, if you look at every belt in the UFC from the Middleweight, Light-Weight, Light-Heavyweight, Welterweight, and the Heavweight, they are all exactly the same.
What I was wondering is, do you think UFC should change it up a bit and make the belts look different for each weight class or simply just keep it the same as it is now??
Or would it be too much like wrestling that way by having different looking belts??
Since every belt is the same in the UFC, I actually wouldn't mind a slight change just to distinguish the weight classes.
Because from looking at the poster of St. Pierre vs. Penn, it looks like they are holding the exact same belt, which they are but in 2 different weight classes.
There should be something on the belt that differs from the rest, by saying either "Welterweight champion of the World" or "Light-Heavyweight champion of the World" etc. Something like that.
Anyways, that's just my 2 cents on the matter. What do you all think?? Keep the belts the same or change it up a bit??

I don't know. I mean, I think it would just be to much like wrestling, and to gimmicky.

I do think the belts should be different in appearance. I also really don't think it'd be gimmicky or whatever. As long as the designs are simple, it'd be just fine. It's not like anyone will be walking around with a stupid spinner UFC logo, or have some sort of ugly butterfly motif for their belt.
A slightly larger center plate, different colored leather straps, or whatever type of small variations could go a long way.

I think one of the side plates has which division the belt is for, but I'm not sure. I actually like the way the belts are rihgt now.

I can tell you that the UFC talked about this a few years ago. And decided against it because to many ego's are in the UFC. They decided they don't want one championship to seem more important than others. I remember Dana saying "this isn't the WWE were a 180 pound guy can win the heavyweight title."
Because then you get guys saying "I don't like the way this belt looks let's change it" and that just takes away from the belt's legacy.

I like the fact that they are the same but Im sure there is some words on the titles such as middle weight champ or hw champ. they are just unnoticable in pics of them. Either way I think the belts are fine the way they are...

They are not the same. Each division's championship is distinguished on the side plate.

The belts are all the same now/very similar, so all divisions have the same belt, so no-division has a better looking belt, or a more prestigous seeming title then others. So everything appears equal. Adding new titles, that look different sounds great...but in the future with more weight classes, or as MMA becomes more and more about entertainment in the UFC, we'll start to see more ridiculous belts. (Like WWE) Maybe 10 years from now, their wont be spinner belts...MAYBE their will. I'd rather just keep the focus off the belt itself, and on the fighter and the prestige.

You sound like you're more familiar with the WWE than real sports, if you know what I mean. The UFC isn't and never will be about goofy entertainment. Its a sport. The MLB, NFL, NHL, all of those real sports aren't about entertainment.

The UFC, just put Brock vs. Couture, and openly admitted, "its a big ticket draw, so that's why." and it's not about ENTERTAINMENT? If it's not about entertainment, why the heck is CB dollaway (their hopeful next TUF star) on the maincard, and Okami and Lister (both labelled boring fighters), on the undercard? It's alot about entertainment, if it was all about the "sport" of it, we wouldn't have lightweight and welterweight division, sitting with their thumbs in their ass, waiting for Penn/GSP to happen.

You have a point, but this is nothing that can't be said about any other sport. All sports want to put on the best possible match-ups in order to make the most amount of money. It's just that most other sports are so massive that they've created a separate governing body to control who faces who, meaning that most of the good stuff occurs in the post-season. That means that everyone, regardless of how crappy they are, gets their time in the limelight. UFC, as a sport that is still growing, can't really afford for EVERYONE to have their time to shine EVERY card. It sucks for the fighters, but the really good ones rise to the occasion and beat enough ass to really earn their spot on a PPV or TV. Even the "characters" that are just put on the TV screen in the hopes of building them up have to prove themselves or sooner or later they'll get caught with their pants down and embarrassed. In these tough economic times, UFC strikes me as one of the only sports that actually seems to have shown some growth.
