I want to say it was 1996 but I can't be sure, but yeah, Yokozuna vs Steve Austin, 'Zuna went for the Banzia drop but the top rope broke and he fell on his backside. Was that planned like the Lesnar/Big Show superplex or a mess up like the Jericho springboard drop kick.

This is something I haven't heard about/read about/seen in a few years, so if my memory is serving me correctly it was an accident.

I'm fairly certain it was planned...possibly.

It was planned, because Austin immediately went for the roll up pinfall. If it was an accident, there would have been a second or two of awkward looking around. They wanted a way for Austin to believably go over Yoko, since he was being groomed to be the next big star.

Definatly planned, a creative finish to boot. not to mention it was yoko's last match of any real importance (that survivor series 96 match sucked).

You could tell it was planned, you can see Yoko quite clearly pulling at the turnbuckle.

Hell, I think even Justin Hawk Bradshaw was on the show, and the King of the Ring wasn't. I still don't understand why.

I remember reading that the stunt was planned. But it also served as a way to humliate Yoko in a sense so that he would be inspired to drop a few pounds. Yoko was of course in on the incident. But it was staged to humble him a bit. Unfortunately, it didn't do much good.

Also Yoko irish whiped Austin into the ropes and Austin turned around before hitting the ropes and ran back and clotheslined him

It was planned, and was also done to send a message to Yoko, by management, by openly addressing his weight issue and encouraging him to drop the weight as best as he could (as Sucka pointed out before). Unfortunately, that never materialized, Yoko never made the rumored return back to the WWF, and died a few years later.

I'm pretty sure this is around the time Yokozuna was a babyface, since he has his beard going on. Turning him was such a stupid move on creative's part in hindsight, because Yokozona was one of the most effective monster heels in history.

Also Yoko irish whiped Austin into the ropes and Austin turned around before hitting the ropes and ran back and clotheslined him good eye, and this certifies rather it was planned or not.
