Observe.
Back in 1997, I hated him as a mark.. but older now, I definitely appreciate him. What an unexpected heel turn, and what a way to make it all work.

I'd agree with that statement. His heel turn was the biggest event that prompted the 90s business boom.
McMahon or Bischoff would probably be his top competition, but neither of them were wrestlers.

Hogan's heel turn was to this day one of the biggest ever moments in wrestling history.
But I don't feel Hogan was the best heel of the 90s, for this simple reason - the job of the heel is ultimately to get their comeuppance and put the babyface over huge at the climactic moment. And Hogan didn't really do that because of the politics in WCW. The WCW-NWO war was too one-sided. Sting should have beaten him in their match at (I think) Starrcade '97.
For my money, the best heel of the 90s was Vince McMahon.

Agreed that Hogan wasn't the best but very good - another name that pops into my head is HHH - after his turn on DX and joining the corporation in 99 - I think its safe to say he became the most hated heel in a looooong time - I personally hated his guts and im sure alot of you did at that time too.......

I don't think HHH really found his feet until the McMahon-Helmsley faction right at the turn of the century.

I'd love to see a heel Hollywood return. I think that would be the only way the Austin/Hogan match could work

For my money, the best heel of the 90s was Vince McMahon. Sting did end up beating Hogan at Starrcade '97, but I agree the circumstances weren't too good and were very political. Still, he did put over Goldberg and start off his big run, and I remember him hotshotting the belt to Luger on a Nitro too. And yeah, Vince McMahon was awesome too. He'd be my #3 right behind Ric Flair, and has that show-stealing heel potential whenever he turns up on a Raw here or there. I'd love to see a heel Hollywood return. I think that would be the only way the Austin/Hogan match could work I envision the feud with Austin as the heel. I don't think you can make Hulk Hogan a bad guy anymore.
