Mir or St. Pierre Mir or St. Pierre St. Pierre or Mir St. Pierre or Mir
I think I'll go with Mir. INCREDIBLE comeback. Although Anderson Silva owned the octagon this year too.

You want me to pick the FIGHTER of the year, or do you want me to pick who had the most IMPACT on the year?
If Impact...please put up Brock Lesnar, so I can vote for him...

It's obviosly fighter of the year. Why would Lesnar be up? He went 2-1 on the year. Not one fighter nominated has a loss. There's alot of fighters NOT nominated that performed better on the year.

Anderson Silva, homies. Despite the Cote strangeness, 2008 showed continued growth to Anderson's legacy. As Migsy said, "complete dismantling" barely begins to describe what Silva did to the middleweight division.
If Light Heavy and Welterweight are the Greener Pastures of the UFC, then Middleweight is the post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland where everyone's hair is falling out and giant cockroaches chase down the last dredges of humanity to eat their brains.

Well, I gotta go with Mousasi for both the level of competition he's faced and how much he stepped up to the plate and really turned himself into a star. Much respect. And how can anyone actually vote for Anderson Silva when he's only beaten one legitimate opponent all year? Let's be serious, if beating Patrick Cote or James Irvin makes you eligible for best fighter of the year... Well I'm just saying there'd be a lot of people eligible is all... Since they suck. Badly. They're terrible. Tomato cans.

Hes the fighter of the year for his complete distruction of the MW division..i dont care who he faced, he murdered every single one of them. there is no one else who deserved fighter of the year. Lesnar had a big impact but cannot be considered for fighter of the year with a 2-1 record for the year... Silva without a question.

^^ Not in 2008 He is not. He did not completly destruct the MW division in 08. He only fought twice at MW in 08. One time he fought at LHW so you cant say he wins it for his destruction of the MW division in o8.. He beat Patrick Cote & Dan Henderson from he MW division. Beating 2 MWs in 08 does not count as destructing the MW division. You cant count his fights from 07. Sorry to say...

As much as I hate to admit it, how can it not be Rashad Evans? Yeah, he only had two fights, but they were a KO win over the man who used to rule MMA, Chuck Liddell and Forrest Griffin, who was coming off wins over Rampage Jackson and Mauricio Rua. I know Silva is everybody's guy, with good reason, but Evans' 2 wins are way more impressive than the 3 Silva had. My vote is for Rashad Evans.

God I hate the term "tomato can".
In any case, I'm really curious about Gegard Mousasi. I've heard a lot of good things about the guy. Considering I don't know enough, I can't ignorantly give him my vote though.
My vote is torn between Torres, Thiago Silva, and Florian. Thiago was very impressive this year, but I'm still curious as to where his heart will be in the long run. There's always talk about his problems cutting weight, and it makes me wonder if that will eventually become a serious issue (whether it be with his stamina, or popping up as a problem when it's time for him to get a title shot).
Florian has been great as well, and has a tremendous appeal as both a fighter and a person. I'm eager to see how he does in a second championship fight.
Torres, plain and simple, has been a joy to watch this year. I loved the Maeda fight, and enjoyed his recent bout with Tapia. I just worry he could slowly go through the Silva route with his division. A big fish in a small pond, fighting whomever "kind of" fits best as a #1 contender. This is a problem further amplified by the seemingly small amount of great BW's of the MMA world. It's an issue that could show it's face in a year or so if Torres continues to dominate.
With that said, my hats are off to Thiago, Florian, and many others on the list. Still, my vote goes to Miguel Torres.

I went with Thiago Alves. He really rose to the top of the Welterweight division this year. He had impressive TKO wins over Karo and Matt Hughes, dominated Josh Koscheck in October and he's going to get the next title shot in the division against Penn/Pierre.
Eddie Alvarez was a close second. Coming out on the winning end if 2 FOTY candidates and if he beats Shinya Aoki next week, he's right up there.

So perhaps out of boredom or being too stubborn about making my point, I thought I'd make a list of everyone in the UFC who has done exactly what Anderson Silva has accomplished in "destroying" the middleweight division (getting two wins). *Ahem*... - Wilson Gouveia (Who not only won twice at MW but once at LHW) - Dan Miller - Demian Maia (With more wins than Anderson Silva) - CB Dolloway - Tim Credeur - Michael Bisping (With more wins than Anderson Silva) - Thales Leites - Jason McDonald - Yushin Okami - Patrick Cote - Nate Marquardt So, if your argument is that Anderson Silva was the fighter of the year for "destroying" the Middleweight Division, and also by your logic it doesn't matter who he beat... Hes the fighter of the year for his complete distruction of the MW division..i dont care who he faced, he murdered every single one of them. Then you would have to say that every single one of the fighters I listed above are above everyone else in this poll. So remember, when you read this fool's speel about how Anderson Silva is the best fighter of the year for destroying the Middleweight Division, remember that by agreeing with him means you agree that Dan Miller was more eligible for fighter of the year than anyone on this poll. Seriously.

Seriously. I'm curious then, who exactly would you like to see Anderson Silva beat? Rich Franklin? - He destroyed him, twice. Dan Henderson? - Done Nate Marquardt? - Done Patrick Cote? - Was winning before injury. The MW isn't exactly "stacked" and Silva doesn't exactly have elite fighters knocking at the door. The only people he could face now: Damien Maia - Still needs that "big" win to get a title shot, IMO. Feeding him to Silva now, takes away a potentially big fight. Michael Bisping - Just dropped to MW, wasn't impressive against Leben, winner of Bisping/Henderson will get title shot. Yushin Okami - Needs to prove he can beat a top tier MW. Lost to Franklin. There aren't many Middleweights that deserve a shot, BECAUSE Silva has ran through them, with ease. (I kept Leites off this list because they're scheduled to fight)

Anderson Silva. The guy is like a damn ninja inside the octagon. It isn't like he just entered the octagon this year...he CONTINUED his destruction of everyone put in front of him. Also this is the year that he tied Royce Gracie for most consecutive wins...that in its own rights is impressive.

(I kept Leites off this list because they're scheduled to fight) I'm not saying Anderson Silva hasn't beaten anyone impressive. He did well against Dan Henderson. All I'm saying is Patrick Cote and James Irvin are far from legitimate forces in either weight class and I don't think beating any one fighter would make anyone fighter of the year. I'm also not saying any of the guys I listed are candidates for fighter of the year. My point was that if someone was to argue that by beating any two guys at Middleweight means they destroyed the Middleweight Division and are the fighter of the year, you would then have to say that all of the guys on my list qualify for that just as much as Anderson Silva. As for who Silva should face, I personally feel his rightful place is at 205 at this point. He seems to fit better at that weight class and there's a lot more serious competition for him there. Sure, that might hold up the Middleweight Division for a while, but look at the good putting the Heavyweight Title on ice for a year has done for that division. I think you'd agree if you gave guys like Bisping, Maia, Okami, Leites, and theoretically Henderson a year to sort out the pecking order, it'd be a lot better than just handing Leities a title shot without having really done that much. I should again point out that I'm not hating on Anderson Silva whatsoever. All I'm saying is that I don't think you can really argue for him being fighter of the year when other fighters have faced much stiffer competition, had much more important fights, and achieved much more than beating two gatekeepers and Dan Henderson.
