“Nogueira had some other problems too going into [UFC 92]. Nogueira had just gotten over a Staph infection and he had some other problems but when they fought in PRIDE, PRIDE put on such freak shows, guys fighting out of their weight class, things like that. That’s why I’m so against it. That’s how you ruin guys early. If you’re a professional athlete, time is not good to you. Time catches us all.”
UFC President Dana White comments on the history of fighters like Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Wanderlei Silva and the toll their days in PRIDE may have taken on both their bodies and careers. He also indicates that “Big Nog” was more than likely less than 100 percent for his fight against Frank Mir — a lopsided affair that saw Nogueira finished for the first time ever in his career. =================================
interesting nonetheless

Pretty much. I feel for Nog, but I won't be taking anything away from Mir. It'd just be wrong to relegate a career-defining performance with "well, the opponent wasn't 100%" status.
IMO, it's actually quite hard to fight at 100% in a sport like MMA. There are all manner of minor things that could hold you back from 100% but not make the athletic commission say "He's in no shape to fight".
You could be in the last stages of recovering from a sprain or break, you could've pulled a minor muscle during a routine training exercise, an old injury could be flaring up, hell, you could even have slept in the wrong position and woken up with your arm feeling funky.
That said, it's kinda sad how all this dirty laundry is being aired out now that PRIDE is gone. All these rumors and stuff that just really can't be refuted or proved. I really don't know where I stand with the statement that PRIDE cut fighter's careers short by constantly making them fight out of their weight class. A lot of PRIDE's brightest stars have fallen post-PRIDE...Cro Cop got nearly beheaded, Henderson got choked, Rampage went insane (he rebounded, of course, but the point stands), Wandy get KTFO...
Part of me has to wonder whether it's just plain 'ol wear and tear or if PRIDE put some unnecessary stresses on their top dogs and now those top dogs are paying the price post-PRIDE.

I hate it when after a loss the stories come out about how they weren't at 100%, that they had this injury etc. At the end of the day if you get into the cage/ ring to fight then in my mind that excuse means nothing. Either you're able to fight or you are not.
As for the Pride fighters, a lot of them hit therir peak whilst fighting in Pride so stands to reason that they aren't performing at that level now. Plus they've all had some tough fights & injuries and old age on top of it.
However the only thing I hated about Pride was the Freak Show fights, like Sapp destroying Tamura etc. These fights proved nothing & were so dangerous for the smaller fighters. Look at the guys Sak fought throughout his career, a natural midleweight who fought top Heavyweights like Crocop & Vovchanchyn, freaking insanity!

They may have been at their peak, yea, but that doesn't change the fact that Wanderlei and some other top dogs fought almost every two months for over a year. Wanderlei and Jackson being 32-9-1 and 29-7 respectively is insane for their age. Silva is just 32 while Rampage hasn't even broken the big 3 0 yet.

Like I said in the other post. I'm a big Mir fan and I love watching him fight. He looked awesome against Nog, but Nog didn't show up. Nog barely even tried. Mir did standard boxing procedure, take your time, look for openings, and take the punches you know will land. He did just that and Nog was gone. I've seen Nog take some beatings, and I do think that those previous beatings have screwed him up. I'll again make the comparison to Arturo Gatti, he had some of the best fights in boxing, but he got beat to crapso many times that he became almost a punching bag in the ring. He was just not fight functional.

If I were Nog I would have not taken the fight. But knowing him he would fight even if his left leg was cut off. Staph infection is nothing to mess around with. But he did take the fight and lost so that is his own fault. Honestly I would love to see a rematch later when he is healthy.

Some of us can take it better than others but in the end, EVERYone can be KO'ed. Everyone. Especially if they've already absorbed some awful beatings. Shit...MARK HUNT just got KO'ed the other day. Mark Hunt. Suddenly Nog getting dropped doesn't seem so far out.

I believe it. Hey, If he were 100% and he still lost, it wouldn't have been by TKO
