Dean Lister is out of the UFC after asking to be released from his contract with the organization, it has been reported.
Lister lost a unanimous decision to Yushin Okami at UFC 92 last week and it had been rumored prior to the match that he would be cut if he lost.
The renowned grappler, who has competed successfully in the Abu Dhabi Combat Club, may now head to Japan, according to his management.
Haymaker's Empire told MMA Weekly yesterday that they are in talks with several organisations that have expressed an interest in Lister.
These are said to include DREAM and Affliction, but with Lister apparently keen to face the likes of Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza or Sengoku middleweight champion Jorge Santiago, Japan may be the more likely destination.

He was always a bum to me. He is an extremely good practitioner of BJJ. One of the best in the world.. But his standup game is horrible. He needs work and needs to ecome a more rounded fighter...

In the entire 4+ years I've been watching UFC. I don't remember any Dean Lister fights....I mean I probably saw him fight, but nothing memorable.
And that mirrors his UFC depature...nothing memorable.

And that mirrors his UFC depature...nothing memorable. This sums up my feelings perfectly. "I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors" and all that other stuff. But the plain fact is that he asked for and received his release. Open and shut case, and I'm pretty sure his career in the UFC can be called the same.

You can only have so many lackluster performances before Dana cuts you. Lister to me always seemed like they kept him around so that guys could beat him and have his name on their resume as beating a high level BJJ practitioner. Which is fine except this is MMA, not straight jits, and Lister has always been a grappler struggling to get by with just his jiu jitsu in a game that is far far more than that. Not to mention, he's had his share of boring fights. I'm not one of these rednecks who doesn't appreciate the ground game mind you...I love grappling, and fights that hit the mat can be just as exciting as a standup war, but man...go watch Lister vs. Suloev sometime and see if you can stand it without hitting fast forward. I'll buy you a beer if you can stomach it.

He's always had an impressive ground game. He beat Jeremy Horn and Sakarra via submission but like others said his ground game is garbage and his departure from the UFC is not that big a deal imo.

I was there for the fight where Nate Marquardt annihilated Dean Lister. I'll never forget how hopeless Lister seemed, with Marquardt knocking him down repeatedly and Lister being just durable enough to avoid being finished, but too weak to do anything but be a punching bag for three rounds.
That's the fight that earned Marquardt his title shot at Anderson Silva, I believe.

The fight was horrible and I'm not surprised he quit before they fired him.

Ah, no big loss really. Lister isn't the worst fighter ever, but he isn't the best either. I think he was fairly decent. Good luck to him.

I just started to really get interested in him after I saw him on TUF3 with Ortiz. I guess no big loss but I wanted to see more.

The guy is a great grappler. I would love to watch him in those types of tournaments but he is not cut out for UFC. Too boring of a fighter for them and the majority of their audience.

Im glad he left, he def. has some of the worst stand up. You would think he would train his striking in between fights, but it seems all he trains is get knocked down and motion for the other fighter to go on the ground with him, whatta loser. He's not a MMA fighter, he needs to stick to grappling.

That's hardly time to "hang em up." Lister has always been that guy that is a better teacher than fighter. He's in the Gurgel, Horn, Ludwig boat.

Oh my. I agree though. Dean is a good trainer that's all. He should just do JJ comps. Build a legacy that way. Because god knows that when it comes to getting hit Dean just can't do it.
