“Gabriel is in Brazil training a lot of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu where we believe will be the key to win this match…. It’s going to be a tough fight and [if he wins] Napao (Gonzaga) will have [earned the right] to face the winner of Mir vs. Lesnar. But we’re not thinking about that because we have to respect Carwin and we’re focused on this fight.”
The trainer for former heavyweight division number one contender Gabriel Gonzaga feels that his fighter will get another shot at championship glory if he can topple undefeated heavyweight specimen Shane Carwin at UFC 96 from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 7. “Napao” failed in his first attempt to become champion, losing to Randy Couture via bloodbath at UFC 74 back in 2007. He is currently on a two-fight win streak after enduring back-to-back losses. He submitted Justin McCully with a first round kimura at UFC 86: “Jackson vs. Griffin” in July and then crushed an overmatched Josh Hendricks at UFC 91 with a first round knockout. It won’t be so easy against Mr. Carwin. Not even close.
This would be an insane fight and given the vurrent situation the HW division i can see it happening.

It would be a great fight. I'd like to see Gonzaga pick up the win.

im sorry but I dont see Gonzaga as top tier talent...too bad the HW division lacks top stars or Gonzaga wouldnt even be considered.
I find it kinda funny that a couple wins against nobodys and this shmuck thinks he deserves a title shot AGAIN.

Gonzaga is far from bad, but I've never been a huge fan. Still, I tip my hat off to him for dropping Cro Cop and riding that thunder for as long as he has.

I think Gonzaga is decent but I don't think he will get past Carwin. Bottom line the HW division needs Arlovski and CroCop back...when Gonzaga is being considered for ANOTHER title shot and he hasn't faced a top-tier HW in awhile is ridiculous.
Kongo deserves the shot more than Gonzaga IMO...and I would much rather see Kongo vs. Lesnar or Kongo vs. Mir rather than Gonzaga

Hard to really say Kongo deserves a shot instead of Gabe when both have only been on a 2-win streak. I say the winner of Gabe vs. Carwin faces Cheick for the number one contender spot.

It's crazy how in just one year the UFC managed to turn a completely dead weight class into, in my opinion, one of the more intriguing ones in the entire company.
This fight should be awesome and is really going to be a great barometer for both guys in the coming year. Gonzaga's been impressive in his last two but against arguably lower-class opponents while Carwin has been VERY impressive in his career so far against probably even less calibur opponents. If Carwin can beat Gonzaga like he's beaten all of his opponents thus far, I think that's going to prove for sure that's he's a force to be reckoned with in the UFC. On the other hand, if Gonzaga can pull off another impressive win and end Carwin's momentum, that'll also go pretty far in getting Gonzaga closer to another title shot.
I do, however, disagree that this win alone earns either guy a title shot. Personally, if Velasquez wins his next bout (I believe scheduled for February), I'd like to see Valesquez against Kongo and the winner of that face the winner of Gonzaga/Carwin. Whoever ends up on top there, in my opinion, will have truly earned a shot at the Heavyweight Title. Of course in that situation you risk a situation where potential future draws like Carwin and Velasquez could end up being put out of the equation which, from a business standpoint, is probably not the best idea.
Either way, this fight is really interesting and should be very explosive.
EDIT
I forgot to mention that the major reason behind my idea for the mini tournament is that, at the moment, all four of the above mentioned guys have two consecutive wins in the UFC. Not exactly the kind of number that guarantees anyone a title shot when you're facing lower-par talent.
