When TNA began its Knockouts division with Gail Kim as the centerpiece of the division, TNA needed to bring in additional talent to fill out TV storylines. Angelina Love and Velvet Sky were brought in to merely fill roster slots, but quickly became the top act in the division as the Beautiful People.
Angelina says they were brought in by TNA management for a specific role of "girls next door," but the storyline quickly changed into the arrogant heel tandem currently on TNA TV.
"I think we just exploded over the last year. It was our idea to do the Beautiful People tag team thing," Angelina told the Daily Star to promote TNA's U.K. tour. "At first the boss wanted us to do the kind of cute girl next door thing, and we tried it, but it wasn't really us."
As a result, they went the heel diva route and Angelina says they earned their keep in TNA by letting their talent take over.
"We are way more than (T&A)," said Angelina. "We started at the bottom, and worked our way up. We worked for little or no pay and slept in parking lots because we couldn't afford the hotels. We drove six hours for a crowd of thirty people and not getting paid.
Playing up the "anti-WWE divas" video packages TNA frequently airs on Impact, Velvet Sky says they've worked through every possible injury and hardship to get to this point of being national TV stars.
"Both of us had a million injuries and worked a million shows," Velvet said. "We don't come from a Hooters background or a Hawaiian Tropic background, we worked our a----- off to get where we are now, and that is the massive difference."
