The New Generation when the F in WWF stood for fun
You know when I think of my favourite era in wrestling it’s not the Attitude era that springs to mind it is the New Generation era and in this article I will tell you why everyone who says the WWE was bad then should maybe give it a second chance.
To start I class the New Generation era as 1994-WM13 peoples opinions on this may vary but this is where I class it from, The WWE’s new generation was a shot at WCW for using old WWE performers while the WWE was using there younger talent. So what made it so good it was fun to watch plain and simple I used to look forward to watching it every week a lot more than I do now. I think a big part of this is because back then a wrestler lets say Razor Ramon he didn’t need to go out and talk for 10 minutes each night to get his feud over. I think a big part of it may have been that RAW was only on for an hour so there was less time for talk.
The reason I feel newer fans should give this era a chance is the talent was so good at this time people like Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Owen Hart, Razor Ramon, 123 Kid, British Bulldog, Undertaker, Jeff Jarrett and I could go on and on all these guys were great story tellers in the ring. A lot of people look at this era as a time when the WWE was filled with gimmicks which in part is true but a lot of the guys that played this gimmicks could actually wrestle and carry a half decent match Waylon Mercy and Jean pier Lafiet spring to mind.
One thing I want to mention that I never hear brought up is in 1995 at the time I think this was the greatest segment ever produced on RAW (it is still one of my favourites now but I never hear it talked about). It was when British Bulldog turned heel. Bulldog asked Diesel for his help as Lex Luger had left and he had no partner to take on M.O.M. Bulldog and Diesel had the match under control until Bulldog turned his back on his friend and delivered the slap heard round the world.
Following this there was a 6 man tag match with Diesel HBK and Undertaker vs. Bulldog Yokozuna and Owen Hart. Undertaker had everything under control late in the match until Mabel came down to help Jim Cornett’s trio. When RAW went of the air with Diesel HBK and Undertaker all lying motionless in the ring it was a moment I have never forgotten. This was also the time that forced Undertaker to wear his grey mask when he came back. The Bulldog & Diesel storyline was great if not a little short and they did not need 10 minutes of promo time to make it work each week.
Something else that started at this time was the WWE switching to 12 PPV’s a year with the introduction of the In Your House PPV’s. In Your House at first was a 2 hour PPV (which was not shown in the UK until IYH 13 Revenge of the Taker) which was cheaper than a standard PPV. These PPV’s were really really underrated ad had some of the best and underrated matches in WWE history matches like Hart vs. Hakushi, Owen Hart vs. HBK, Bulldog vs. Bret Hart,. Also during 1996 Shawn Michaels wrestled Marty Jannetty for the WWE title in what in my opinion is one of the greatest RAW matches of all time. I don’t understand why this time is looked down on maybe because I did not watch WCW who I have heard arguably had a better product at the time as I said I did not watch so I can’t comment. What I can tell you though is back then wrestling was all about fun which I think a lot of us forget is what wrestling is supposed to be. When I come across people who claim the WWF was terrible to watch at this time 9/10 they didn’t even watch and just go on the odd footage or from what they have read. Yes the business was down but do the world wide ratings of RAW really effect how you personally enjoy the show?
