What was the reason for Steve Austin leaving back in 2003 I believe?

He was gonna be wrestling Lesnar on Raw, which wasn't advertised, so he left, feeling that letting Brock win wouldn't do anything for either man, plus, I think he was burnt out, plus he wasn't happy with creative, I remember once on Bite This, he said that the creative was "Piss Poor"

It was 2002 when he walked out. He returned in 2003 where he retired and became GM. He left again in 2004 before Summerslam as the Sheriff of Raw. I believe he left because of contract issues that time.

in 2002 there was heaps of reasons
he was in chronic pain,he disagreed with points of the NWO angle and his placing on the WM card.the thing with Lesnar was just the last straw I think
all in all he was just burnt out

yup you've all covered the answer pretty well - it was a whole concoction of things that led to Austin becoming v.unhappy with him time in WWE.
I honestly thought putting him against Scott Hall at WM-X8 was a terrible idea. Hall isn't a good enough wrestler at that stage in his life to carry Austin through a match - we all know Austin needs a good worker as an opponent (Rock/Angle/HHH all did this very well) as his body - mainly knees were pretty banged up by this stage.
I guess it happened for the best - Austin was given time to rethink his career/life and also gave him time to heal physically/mentally.

i believe the reason he faced scott hall on the undercard was that he point blank refused to work a match with hogan at wm. he was worried that hogan would double cross him and make him look bad (which is what happened to the rock!) i think after the hogan/rock match stone cold stormed out of the arena and didn't show up for raw the next night!

I'm quite sure he retired because of knee injuries. That's why he had legbraces.

According to Russo and Ferrara in their shoot interview, Austin was the most difficult main eventer to work with in the WWF. Because of what happened to him in WCW, he was always paranoid that everyone (the writers, the other wrestlers etc) were trying to screw him over so he really "protected his spot" (for example, not working with Jeff Jarrett, who he thought would drag him down the card). And by the time 2002 came around, his body was breaking down and he was getting older, and his character was stuck in a rut. Honestly, I don't think Austin could handle being demoted and used to put younger talent over. And he was right that he should've lost to Brock Lesnar in a promoted match that meant something. Plus, he'd been unhappy with the writing for a while, and he was insecure about his injuries, so he walked. That was his 2002 walk out.
In 2003, he returned but only had one real match, against The Rock at WM19. He retired then because of injuries, and became a GM character. After WM20 in 2004, he left WWE because they had a contractual disagreement (I don't remember the details, but I'd guess that Vince wanted him to take a pay-cut from his previous contract because he didn't wrestle anymore).
