Recently, I've been purchasing my comics from a local chain that also deals in cd's, pop culture, and other knick knacks. It wasn't choice, but it was close to home, and I'd been cutting my spending habits as is. Within the past month, they'd be advertising for a comic specialist position. Needing a part time job, and enjoying the prospect of doing something I liked, I naturally applied. Time went by, and I followed up to no avail. Finally, I'd decided, I just wasn't their guy, and gave up.
Today, I strolled in, no hard feelings, to buy a whopping two books. One has been previewed, advertised, and promoted since the end of Secret Invasion (NA: The Reunion #1), and the other was The Boys #28. When I first approached the section, it was clear that whoever the new hire was had started - the display was not in its normal way. Additionally, there were, at best, 10 to 15 new books on display this week, down from typically 30 that they order. I know their money maker isn't comics, but I found this quite unusual. Nevertheless, I went to reach for my books - nowhere to be found. Nowhere. Neither of them. I was, to say the least, disheartened.
I had chosen this place as my shop for the sake of convenience, but that simply will not do. I had intended on staying a loyal customer regardless of the job outcome, but if this is going to be the case, I simply cannot justify that. I know myself, and several others, who'd applied that would have been stellar at the job, ensuring a well stocked, well rounded comics section.
Simply put, the 30 minute drive out of town is going to have to do. The shop out there is not only well stocked, but intensely collector friendly - the only shop to not mark up Amazing Spider-Man #583 the day of release. I used to take this place for granted, but now I intend on becoming a subscribed customer, simply out of principle. It's clear that they deserve the business.
