After the dreamcast Sonic took a nosedive. I'd say on and off since 2006.

Sonic Adventure 2 is my favorite of all time. I prefer it over the original 2D games.
That said, anything after Sonic Heroes (which was mediocre) was pure crap.

Sonic Adventure 2 was definitely the end of the games ruling. The first one was AMAZING, the second one, not so much. I never even finished beating it.

I think Sonic Heroes was the end of the greatness, because it was the beginning of gimmicks. I know Sonic Adventure 2 had Evil VS Hero gimmick, but it wasn't forced. Sonic Heroes, teams were FORCED down our throats.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with Sonic Adventure 2, if you knew how to play it. In fact, I like both the Adventure games more than any other Sonic game. I still own them both and play them regularly, too.
Now, when it got to Sonic Heroes, that was Sonic Team/SEGA's first screw-up. They had built the perfect engine for a 2-D Sonic game with Sonic Adventure 2. It was years in the making and they perfected it. Then they just decided to scrap that engine completely, and make a whole new one. Anything from Sonic Heroes and on just felt broken. Like, each game after Sonic Adventure 2, was just Sonic Adventure 2's intellectually- disabled cousin.
After SA2, even the soundtracks were bad. The Chao Garden mini game was scrapped for who knows what reason. Personally I thought the Chao Garden gave SA2 so much replay value. I raised so many of those things it was unbelievable. The soundtrack was cheesy, but it worked.
Again, anything after SA2 is just....It's just games trying to emulate what Sonic Adventure 2 was. Sure, you've got updated graphics, but who cares if the game is damn near unplayable?

I have almost all the games(exept the ones made in the past 3 years) and SA2 is the one I play the most. The only thing I dont like are the knuckles/tails type missions. If the game would of have more sonic levels it would of defanitaly went down as the best sonic ever. Overall though I would say Sonic 2 was better just because it was solid the whole way though and was very fun.

i think the problem with sonic, which is also it's greatest asset, is the speed. fans expect sonic games to be fast, really fast, and imo that is just hard te create properly in 3D because you have so much more to see/do so you will always have the fact that in 3D sonic will feel slow and you need to explore things, which for a lot of folks seems to take the typical sonic feeling away. offcourse that's not the only problem, they do really need to stop dragging other characters into the games like that purple cat thing or a human or whatever, sonic shouls be just sonic and his few core friends like tails and knuckles, nothing else. i liked sonic adventure very much but it still couldn't hold a candle to 2D sonic, i think out of all the 3d gamesi played sonic heroes came the closest in terms of the speed feeling and just general sonic gameplay, i loved the teamwork and the athmosphere just felt "sonic" to me, a lot more than in other games, unfortunatly it wasn't a succesful game and they went to the slower paced sonic adventure style gameplay. i believe some game series should just stay 2D, since they never come across as they should in 3d, sonic and megaman definatly fall under that categorie, and even tho castlevania has had some decent 3d adventures, i much prefer the 2D style for it aswell. 2D will never die

Anyone remember the cancelled Sonic Xtreme for the Saturn? If I can recall, that game looked promissing. I guess I just grew tired of Sonic as I matured. Had played all the genesis games 1-Knuckles, Spinball, 3D Blast (which somehow always gave me a feeling of lonliness), and both Adventure games for the dreamcast. Always thought Tails was a chick. The one thing that bothered me was how they tried to make it too much like Mario bros. They need to change the concept with the rings because that sound annoys the hell out of me. If it were up to me I would make a more gritty Sonic game that is not so much an attempt to compete with Mario but to reinvent the character. I know I have a good idea for an xtreme sonic game.

Sonic never translated well into 3D. It had games like Mario, Banjo-Kazooie and Rayman 2 to compete with, and it was never going to top them.
I still like the first few Sonic games, and Sonic 4 E1 and E2 are both quite good.

The two Sonic Adventure game were amazing, 2 was better because it didn't have the God damn awful Big the Cat levels.

I love Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations, Sonic Lost World, Sonic and The Secret Rings (something like that.) I feel like the only one who kinda likes 3D Sonic over 2D. Yet again, I enjoy 3D games a lot.
EDIT: I absolutely love Shadow The Hedgehog too. Brought a whole different aspect of the Sonic World to it. That game will always be special to me. ALWAYS
