If Lex Luger hadn't  ed up and told a reporter about his win the next night at WrestleMania X, or done anything funny like steroids or drugs or anything... Do you think he would of been a decent replacement? He had some decent brawling skill back here, to be honest. It showed best at King of the Ring 1993 against Tatanka. |

he was cool in his own way but he was hardly charismatic enough to follow hulk. he also lacked real wrestling ability and at the time bret hart was putting wrestling back at the forefront of the wwf.
guy never had a chance, they fans loved bret and he damn sure couldnt follow hogan.

I think WWF ahd their chance with Luger at Summerslam 93.the fact he didnt get the belt then wasnt a good sign........
but yeah he effed up big time spilling the beans to that reporter.
Bret was supposed to beat Owen then get canned by Yoko after Owen interfered leaving Luger to dethrone him.
worked out better the way it went down though

I think Luger definatly should've won at SS 93. It was fresh off Hogan leaving, WWE had their hero type figure in Luger, the kids loved him, and as time went on Bret, seemingly was as over, if not more over than Luger, and then him telling all that to the reporter was the final straw in terms of knocking Luger off the top.

Lugers chance was at SS 93 and I think that was the time to give him the strap. With Hogan gone everything was falling into place but then he spilt the beans to that reporter which screwed him.

SummerSlam 1993 was Luger's time. I will never comprehend why they didn't have him win the belt at that event. It was too perfect.
If he had won the belt I still don't think he would have done much. Perhaps a two time WWF Champion. But I think he would have been gone by 1997 for some reason. The fans liked him but not like they loved Ramon, Hart, Diesel, Taker, And later Michaels.

It was just like when he was in the Horsemen...Didn't feel right, and with the whole 'Lex Express' thing, just felt too forced, IMO.
Have to agree with you there. The love for the Bulldog was there as well by this time too.

I am pretty sure he was scheduled to win at WM X only to lose it to Bret Hart anyway the same night.
I agree totally with "nWoWolfPack" ... there was no reason to go through the Yokozuna body slamming and Lex Express story if they would only let him win by count out at SS 93 and not get the belt. Why build him up if he's never going to win? Lex' time from SS 93 to WM X was wasted and he never recovered in the WWF.
The year Yokozuna was champion was completely odd to me anyway.

At some point I felt the WWF were trying to stuff lex down the fan's throats - which I don't think was well received....great example is royal rumble 1994 when lex hand was raised - note the boos and then the cheers when bret's hand was raised.
Also, giving a star the buildup and then not handing him the strap is ridiculous. It's a huge anti-climax and naturally fans will loose faith in the superstar when he goes around the whole country in a luxury bus and then ends up not winning the title.

He was huge, but deceptively quick for his size. And his finishing move-- while a bit ridiculous --definitely got the job done. One of the best foreign heel champions Vince has ever had. |

As far as I've heard, Luger was never scheduled to win the WWF title at WMX; the plan was always to have him lose and Bret walk out as champion.
Basically, this decision was met after the crowd's reaction at the Royal Rumble that year was overwhelmingly in support of Bret over Luger. So, Vince decided to go with Bret since Luger was unable to get himself over to the level they had hoped he would (i.e. as the next Hulk Hogan).
The whole spilling the beans the night prior at a bar isn't true either, from what I've read over the years. Luger simply wasn't a draw and the fans took to liking Bret more.

Luger could never have been the next Hulk Hogan for one reason: He just wasn't that easy to like. Sure, he had fans, but he wasn't as easy to like as Hogan. He didn't have the personality... and actually, Luger always had this underlying, natural arrogance that lends itself to being harder for the "average joe" to get behind.
Hogan was easier to like because he was far better at connecting with fans and making them feel like an important part of his success. He was also better at evoking sympathy, which wins you fans. I can't even remember a single time when I felt sympathy for Lex Luger in any of his storylines, but Hogan was really good at making sure he came across as the natural babyface. Luger did not come across as a natural fan favorite, which is probably part of the reason the WWF felt the need to "push" Luger down fans' throats... he really did need more help getting over than Hogan did.
