NWL.com [January 15th, 2009] 01/15/10 - Award Ceremony; Los Angeles, CA; 8:00 PM
We are live here in Los Angeles tonight for the first annual Award Ceremony for the National Wrestling League! Tonight, we find out who will take home awards such as Wrestler of the Year, Team of the Year and 6 more! A total of 8 awards will be given out in front of a few thousand fans! I'm Jimmy Pietrafesa and surprisingly, I am in a suit, just like the rest of the NWL competitors! Without further ado, let's take it to Jeff Gomez, who will present our first award!
CEO of the NWL, Jeff Gomez thanks everyone for coming out and thanks the great folks at NWL.com for streaming this for us. He tells the fans that he is about to present our first award for Sportsman of the Year! This award is given to someone who displays a great deal of sportsmanship in and outside of a NWL ring. Gomez presents the award to Duan Sanchez Jr. of the Tri-State Evolution! Sanchez Jr. walks up and shakes Gomez' hand. He accepts his trophy and makes a speech thanking his family, friends and fans for this honor. Tri-State takes home the first award tonight.
Gomez comes back to the podium and thanks Sanchez Jr. for a great year. He talks about how good of a year this was for the NWL and hopefully, next year could be the same. He is ready to present the next award, Surprise of the Year. This award is given to the person who wasn't supposed to make a big splash this year in the NWL, but ended up having an amazing year. Gomez presents the award to Kevin Hart of the New York Crush. Hart walks up to the podium, shakes Gomez' hand and gives little speech. He thanks Mike Bockwinkel first, since this would have never happened if Bockwinkel never called him up. Hart tells the fans that next year will be the year of the Hart!
Hart walks off stage and sit down next to Evan Pagano, fellow member of the Crush. Pagano will become a free agent this year, but for now, he is still a member of the Crush. Gomez congratulates the Crush on becoming the Eastern Conference Champions this year and its a shame that they fell short. Gomez is now ready to present the Feud of the Year; our next award! Gomez tells the fans that these two men really took each other to the brink this season and it ended in the NWL's only cage match ever! The award for feud of the year goes to Red Dragon & Tim Smith! Crowd cheers since Dragon is getting an award and both men make their way up to the podium. They shake hands and Smith mentions something to Dragon, before taking his award and walking away. Dragon, who rarely is out of character, is just Marc Jones tonight. He thanks the crowd and sends it back to Gomez.
Jeff then tells us that he hopes for many more feuds like that one during the 2010 season! Gomez continues by stating that he will announce one more award and then we have a short break. During this break, fans will be able to purchase early copies of the '2009: Best of' DVDs, that aren't released until the first week in February! But for now, Gomez is ready to present the award for Rookie of the Year! This award goes to the man who came in and dazzled the NWL, all in his rookie season! Gomez presents the award to Tri-State Evolution's Matt Justice! Justice seems very humble when he receives his award and shakes Gomez' hand. He tells the fans that this is only the beginning of Justice. The fans clap as Justice exits and Gomez send us to break.
- Intermission -
- I picked up a copy of all the DVDs and they look pretty hefty. Each are two disc and look very well produced. I am excited to watch these bad boys during the down time here in the NWL!
- A reminder about the draft is played on the jumbo tron!
We come back now for the second half of the show with a video recap of the year. Gomez then joins us and tells everyone that this is just the beginning of the NWL and hopefully, we will be sticking around for many many many more years! But, for now, we move on to our next award of the night! Gomez brings out the award for Captain of the Year. Gomez states that this award is presented to the captain who best personified their duty as captain and helped their team the most throughout the season. Red Dragon, the captain of the Most Wanted, is presented with the award and the crowd cheers loud. This is the second award Dragon is receiving tonight and he only gives a quick thanks to his team and the crowd before walking off. Gomez cannot get a word in since the crowd is cheering for their captain and they finally die after a few moments.
Gomez congratulates Dragon on his second award of the night and he tells him he deserves it. Jeff Gomez is now ready to present the Record of the Year award. This award goes to the team who had the best record overall in the 2009 season and of course, the fans know that this award belongs to the Los Angeles Most Wanted! Dragon leads his team up to the podium and they celebrate with their fans. Gomez tells the team to stay up at the podium because the entire team has won the next award also. Gomez presents the Most Wanted with the Team of the Year award for 2009! More trophies are brought out and the crowd cheers more as Gomez congratulates the entire team again. Finally, the Most Wanted sit down and it is now time for the FINAL award of the evening!
Jeff Gomez announces that he is going to have to call up a Most Wanted worker again for this award, the Wrestler of the Year. This award is presented to the person who displayed the best record, how valuable this person was to their team and the all-around greatness in 2009. Ace Bennett, the Most Valuable Wrestler in the 2009 'Series Invitational' was announced the Wrestler of the Year and the crowd went wild. Ace celebrated with his team at the seats and then walked up to receive his third award of the evening. He makes a speech about how the fans and his team supported him this season and he wouldn't be here without them. He tells the fans to get ready for the next season because the Most Wanted will repeat! This concludes the award ceremony!
We thank NWL.com for streaming this award ceremony and we will join you folks next on the 26th of February for the first night of the Draft right back here in Los Angeles!

Awards show? Badass. Sanchez winning Sportsman of the Year was cool. Hart getting the Surprise of the year was no...surprise, ha. Free agent this year, huh? I'm excepting offers, although I hope I can just resign with Crush. Bennett getting Wrestler of the Year was awesome, deserved it for sure.

Most Wanted took over the award ceremony, I believe you picked all the right choices, isn't record of the year going to be team all the time, I felt Bockwinkel felt something for his character and sudden winning near the end of the season, it would have been nice to see the runner up so it dosn't seem so most wanted-ish, good luck and keep this up

Nice that Most Wanted got almost every award. Surprised LyNN didn't get anything. Awesome that Ace won Wrestler of the Year, hopefully a repeat performance next year.

Duan Sanchez Jr. winning Sportsman of the Year is nice to see. Woot! I won Rookie of the Year! I am so happy. This is the greatest day of my life! Red Dragon winning Captain of the Year is cool. Wrestler of the Year going to Ace Bennett was smart.

NWL.com [February 26th, 2009] Welcome back to the NWL everyone! Well, the first night of the draft has just come to a close, but I, Jimmy Pietrafesa, will give you get a detailed review of what went down tonight, as two rounds have past! Now, I don't want to bore you with my rambling, so let's go ahead and review tonight's picks!
Round One
The Boston Brawlers and Steve Corino have the first pick tonight. With everyone all dolled up, the Brawlers selected the 25 year old, X Jack! Jack makes the final cut age-wise and experience wise, he will be able to jump right in for the Brawlers in the upcoming season.
The second pick of the draft went to the Las Vegas Blitz, captained by Trace Demon. Demon selected the brother of fellow captain, Red Dragon, Sam Jones, better known as Sam Kineval. Kineval is age 23 but already has 5 years experience under his belt, so he could be able to make a splash this year with the Blitz.
Next pick, third in the draft, went to Mike Bockwinkel and the New York Crush. The Crush selected Jin Yamato, a competitor with a little less experience than most available in the draft. Yamato is 25, but only has been wrestling for 3 years. Even with that fact, Yamato could be the missing piece to the puzzle for New York!
The Tri-State Evolution, headed by Kevin Shamrock, selected Bret Thomas, a young 21 year old with little experience in his past! Even though Thomas has little pro-wrestling experience, he is a former mat wrestling phenom and was once considered a future Olympian, something everyone is looking for their team.
The fifth pick of the first round went to the Chicago Warriors, who is captained by Assassin. Assassin selected Ell Junior, another 25 year old, but this one has over 8 years of experience with him. Junior could definitely be wrestling this year and could provide legit help for LyNN this upcoming year.
The final pick this round went to the Los Angeles Most Wanted, who is headed by the captain of the year, Red Dragon. Dragon picked Silas McGahey, a powerhouse 24 year old who has only been wrestling one year. This may have been a gamble for the Most Wanted, but McGahey could provide power for LA this season!
Round Two
The Brawlers were back on the clock in the second round and Corino chose the young Cody Rejero for the first pick in the second round. Rejero has been wrestling for three years, at 22 years old, but could certainly be wrestling for the Brawlers & the NWL this year!
Up next, the Las Vegas Blitz and Trace Demon were on the clock for their second round pick. Demon selected Derrick Jones for the Blitz. Jones is 25 years old, as he just made the cut, and has 6 years under his belt in the wrestling business. Many expect Jones to be in the NWL majors this year, but only time will tell!
Mike Bockwinkel and the New York Crush were up next in the second round of the 2010 draft. Bock selected another Japanese competitor, Yuko Nagashiki, who could very well be the rookie of the year next year. Nagashiki is only 24, but already has himself 6 years of the wrestling business. Many feel Bockwinkel has made the right choice here.
The Tri-State Evolution & Kevin Shamrock were up next to pick here in the draft and they had selected Connor O'Reily. O'Reily is only 21 years of age and has been wrestling since the age of 18. With this pick, the Evolution could have themselves someone waiting in the wings next year, who could take the NWL by storm with O'Reily.
Our fifth pick of the second round went to the Chicago Warriors, captained by Assassin. Zeke, a 19 year old with four years experience, was picked by Assassin and the Warriors here. Zeke has been on the market for a few months and hopefully will finally prove himself here in the NWL.
Our final pick of the second round and the day went to the Most Wanted. Red Dragon chose Jack Richardson, another young 21 year old who has only been wrestling for two years. Richardson will probably not get a shot at the big time this year, but could prove himself to be valuable down the road.
This concludes today's draft coverage! Be sure to check back here for the third & fourth round picks, tomorrow night in Los Angeles!
