Just wondering, what were your thoughts on this documentary? I thought it was really awesome to get behind the scenes looks at ECW Barely Legal 97. It was awesome as well to get a look inside at the career at 3 of the biggest stars that were in the business at the time (Foley, Roberts, Funk). I thought Jakes parts in the movie were rather sad. I actually remember hearing recently that Roberts went ballistic after seeing the movie saying that Barry Blaustein tryed to make him look bad.

Sorry mate, yes, I've seen it numerous times, and the Jake Roberts stuff is quite sad. Funk is an absolute legend, and Mick's stuff was shot quite well too. The other thing about Roberts is that he says he was told by Funk and Blaustein that the movie was made to warn kids about drug use.

I have not seen it in a while, but I was really shocked about the Jake The Snake part.
The other background / backstage stuff wasn't that impressive. IMO Wrestling with Shadows was a bit better.

I would agree with that. But I guess it was good to see wrestling from different angles. You had two guys who were really succeeding (Funk, Foley) and then you had Jake who went from the top almost to the very bottom.

I think the WWE even put Jake's comments about Beyond the Mat on his WWE DVD that came out a few years ago... been a while since I watched that, but I seem to remember a segment devoted specifically to Jake saying he was tricked by Blaustein.
In my opinion, even if Jake was confused about what the film would be, it's pretty hard to look at some of that footage and believe it ONLY looks bad because of Blaustein. I mean, what makes Jake look bad is the stuff he does on camera (and off camera). That was all Jake's doing, unless Blaustein fabricated each scene and told Jake to act it out (highly unlikely).
You can't use crack and blame it on the director for making you look bad when he happens to include it in the documentary. Especially if it's true that Jake thought this was a film to warn kids about drug use (which I guess it does, in an implied way)... that's all the more reason Blaustein would want kids to see what happens to a once-mighty superstar who can't stop screwing up.
I really liked the documentary ... I thought it was a nice cross-section of different wrestlers in different situations.

I don't think they put a scene with him up there from BTM, but I think in one segment he says he was tricked by a director and friend.

i saw, and i liked it. It made more sense to me on how matches work and how it was cool to see behind the scenes of ECW's 1st PPV.

Yeah exactly. I haven't seen this in a long time so I don't really remember much of it other than seeing Foley and Funk. But I do indeed remember Jake making himself look really bad. As you said, even if he was "tricked"; he still did the acts that made him look bad. I mean he could argue that they only showed the bad I guess. But I'm sure that's about all there was. As a kid it was really cool to see some behind the scenes stuff. So in that regard it was decent I guess. But being a little older, I'm just not interested in it at all for some reason. I don't know why exactly. Maybe if it didn't appear so negative I could deal with it. I can watch Wrestling With Shadows all the time though.

I reviewed it for a Documentary Scriptwriting class.
It really is a great piece of filmmaking, and gets you right into the heads of three wrestling legends. The director really examines professional wrestling and the sacrifices that the athletes/entertainers make to appease their audiences.

I also like the fact that it showed you what Droz, New Jack and the 'WrestleFest' retirement show in Amarillo Texas were like...
The approach was just really good, from dealing with the independent guys (Mike Modest, Tony Jones) to seeing how Vince interacted with Droz as 'Puke'.

Jake in that film was so moving, and his words so eerie and yet so poetic at the same time. As if he was cutting a promo. I just remember being in awe after hearing him speak while staring in the mirror while stock video of streets were added

An incredible movie, however I do remember feeling really down seeing the state of these guys obviously Jake but also the physical mess that is Terry Funk.
Obviously had a bias to show the darker unside of the wrestling industry as Roberts often complains. However when you allow yourself to be filmed off your skull on drugs, talk about the terrible things from your past & then the terrible attempt to bond with his daughter what dids he honestly expect?
Does a good job of showing backstage footage & build up to events from ECW, WWE & that small Indie group but still never understood why that small time promoter turned up with his two guys for the try-outs looking like such a freaking bum!!
