it is my understanding nowadays that wrestlers sign downside guarantees - which provides them with a minimum salary plus the chance to earn more in bonuses, royalties etc.
did wwf wrestlers have anything like that back in the 80's?
also, did they sign exclusive contracts to wwf or could they compete on the independants as well?
furthermore, does anyone have information on the pay scale for wrestlers back in that era?

I'm pretty sure they had exclusive contracts, as Vince at that point in time was hell-bent on destroying and taking over his competition (i.e the independents, and the territories), and so he brought in his rivals' hottest talents.
Almost thirty years later now and nothing has changed.
