Southland Tales, Donnie Darko, and A Scanner Darkly are the most confusing movies on the planet. I either have no idea why people find Donnie Darko confusing or it's so confusing that I have no idea I'm even confused.

Sometimes if I watch a confusing movie, it helps to read it's Wikipedia article after. Helps clear some things up.

I saw it once and yeah, I was really confused. Donnie Darko is in my top 20 favorite movies, but I didn't really get in to Southland Tales too much. I'll definitely have to watch it again though. As for Darko being confusing.. it is maybe the first time you watch it, but the more you see it, it's not confusing at all really. Sometimes if I watch a confusing movie, it helps to read it's Wikipedia article after. Helps clear some things up. I do that too.

As a few others have mentioned, reading the plot on Wikipedia after watching an incredibly confusing movie often helps a great deal.
Southland Tales is a solid effort from Richard Kelly, but it isn't nearly as masterful as Donnie Darko. Donnie Darko is a confusing movie, but one that can be explained by drawing your own conclusions. I found it hard to do that with Southland Tales, it came across more as a mess than anything.
If you want an incredible screwed up movie that makes even Donnie Darko seem easy to follow, check out Mulholland Drive. It contains what I think is one of the most eerie scenes ever in a movie.

Spoilers in white: The first 2 hours of Mulholland Drive is one long lucid dream sequence in the head of Naomi Watts character. The last 30 minutes of the film is the only sequence that takes place in the real world.Once you realize that, the movie is incredibly easy to follow. It took me a few viewings to figure that out though.

I loved Southland Tales. I'm in the minority there though.

A Scanner Darkly makes perfect sense and Donnie Darko was pretty easy to follow. Southland Tales was just weird though. It kept my interest for most of the movie but nothing happened that made sense and it just kinda ended.

Well atleast you're not one of those people who dismiss stuff they don't understand as crap.
But yeah, Southland Tales is just downright entertaining once you really get the feel of the movie.
I can agree that Donnie Darko confused me the first viewing...but after so many...you get it and like it for entirely different reasons. A Scanner Darkly was hardly confusing.

Southland Tales is the Richard Kelly way of explaining revelation in the Bible..
I really enjoyed it honestly.
And Kevin Smith being in it at the end was pretty entertaining just in general.
