Watching this match gives me chills. Anyone know the true story? I mean were they really planning on ending the match after foley was thrown off? and Did he want taker to throw him threw the cage? Also were those backstage angry with undertaker for what hes done? Discuss.

Im not sure but Taker has said in an interview that the cell wasnt supposed to give way on the chokeslam on top of the cell. And foley has said that the 2nd fall hurt worse than the plunge from the side.

I also heard that he was supposed to be thrown off the cell twice but after the chokeslam that was cancelled.

Terry Funk and Mick Foley sat down a few weeks before the match, watched Taker/HBK and Mick felt they couldn't top it. Terry said "You know, you should start the match on top of the cell." Foley said he sucks in cage matches and he felt the match needed a big bump in order not to disappoint. I guess Foley talked Taker into throwing him off the cell (Taker said he didn't want to do it in an interview at WM18).
They figured Mick was too hurt to continue so they thought the match was over but Foley got up and went back up. The cell wasn't supposed to give way when he was chokeslammed(which is why the chair was really close to them that ended up falling with Foley). Taker told Mick when he came to "lets go home Mick" but Mick wanted to go on.
I honestly never heard that Foley was supposed to be thrown off twice. But starting the match back up again on the top, I still wonder what they were planning.

I could of sworn in his (foleys) book terry joked about him getting thrown off, getting back up, and getting thrown off again and Foley said he could. So IDK.

Mick's repeatedly said he's sick of the match...

in one of Funks shoot interviews(cant remember which)he said the second spot was planned........but was made out to be an accident after Foleys wife flipped her lid. one things for sure UT didnt lift him high for a chokeslam...he just kinda pushed/lifted him him and he went through.so IDK......it must have hurt like though. another thing......when they were stamping around on top of that cage it looked SO unsafe.

Wait, going through the cage was planned, or getting thrown off a second time? Yeah, it looked really unsafe. I remember they wee walking around and the cage gave way in a couple spots.

Yeah, the second fall, through the Cage was the one that gave Foley a concussion and the chair landed straight on his mouth, which ed his teeth up. But I also have alwasy wondered wat was actually going to happen after the first fall? How would they have gotten down in a way which made sense, hell, we may never know, you could wonder that maybe it was never going to get off the top, hell maybe Undertaker was planned on going off the Cell too, I know its not really possible but ya never know.

Oh, and of course, not only that, but a tooth ended up in his nostril and his lip was cut, wth him trying to poke his tongue through the cut...The commentary on this particular 'scene' of course was that he was 'smiling'... We'll never see anything like that ever again.

As I recall the throw off the top was planned but the chokeslam on top wasn't supposed to go through the roof. The first Hell in the cell the top was really stiff & brutal on HBK & Undi so they made it less strong which was evidence as they nearly fell through several times. Possibly the reason for Taker's weak chokeslam but still Foley went through.
I recall watching this at the time & thought he was dead.

This better be a legendary match, after all... it's pretty much what Mick Foley is known for now. The guy's had a 20+ year-long career and he's known mainly for falling off the cell.

Here is the story as I have heard it. I don't remember which DVD this was on, but Foley talked in depth about the match.
- The bump off the cage was easier than the one he took in his Cell match with Kane. He said the table broke his fall perfectly and because of how he went off, the bump was easy. Painful, but easy.
- The original plan was not for him to fall through the cage. He and Terry Funk set up the match like this: After the table bump, Mick was to climb on top of the cage again, Taker was supposed to choke slam him and the cage was going to rip, but not break. Foley said Funk had the idea while watching the match Taker had with HBK and the roof started to break. Foley was then going to slide down the opening and drop back into the ring. Taker would follow and the announce team would play up the fact that Mankind was so out of it that he trapped himself in the cage. Afterward, when Mick got the thumbtacks, it would be realized that he had tricked Taker into getting back into the Cell, where Mankind would be at his most dangerous.
However, that never happened since the production guys weakened the Cell too much for a 300+ pound guy and the whole thing broke.

I still get chills watching that match. I can't imagine how painful that second fall was (not discounting the first one either).
