My suggestion: don't hold your breath. Have you ever noticed, that even in the most successful comic shops, the staff adds up to less than five people? This is a hugely niche market that experiences surges far and few between. Most comic shops can hardly afford to pay people a minimum wage.
The shop I currently patronize is run by three guys, who are, incidentally, all co-owners of the business. They've been in business for seven years now, and have just this year brought on one part-time worker to facilitate their gaming events.
My shop (which I've been planning for a year or so, and won't come to fruition for several more), will be run in a very similar manner.

I agree with SYE.
If I were you I would try and find a store thats just opening so you would have a better chance.

read a crapload of comics and spend a lotta time at whatever shop you're most interested in. show your dedication/worth/knowledge and how it could apply to their business.

I agree with SYE. If I were you I would try and find a store thats just opening so you would have a better chance. I think he'd have less of a chance. A good businessman will have enough capital for his overhead (comics, boxes, bags, boards, displays, storefront, etc.). A smart one will have that, and enough capital to stay afloat for at least a year. Nowhere in that business plan would it be practical to hire someone for minimum wage (or more, which is what they usually ask).
