Back in 1997 the WWF shot two seperate angles where Bret physically assaulted Vince McMahon. The first was after a cage match in February 1997, Bret was pissed and Vince entered the ring attempting to interview him. This resulted in Bret grabbing the mike and pushing Vince onto his back, Vince left the ring with a look on his kisser. The second was in July 1997 after it was announced that HBK would referee Bret's WWF title match with The Undertaker at Summerslam '97. Bret stormed down to ringside, slapping Vince headset off and getting into a nasty looking tussle with McMahon, which was broken up by Owen & Davey Boy.
I would just like to know, were there plans for a Bret vs Vince feud before Vince decided that he couldn't afford to keep Bret? Instead eventually replacing it with the now legendary Austin vs McMahon feud?

I'd like to know this as well. By the way, "Vince left the ring with a look on his kisser" sounds like something Gorilla Monsoon would say.

Diesel/Kevin Nash tried running with an 'anti-authority' gimmick before he left for WCW in '96. You can see signs of it in various promos he cut, calling out Vince on-air as the owner of the company. So the seeds were always planted, with Nash and Bret.
There's this, too. A whole USWA/WWF feud was developing, and Vince was playing a prototype of his 'Mr. McMahon' character in Memphis. The gloating, the over-confidence, it's all there in its early stages. So, while Vince was always teasing what was to come, the stride never hit until the Montreal Screwjob and the rise of Steve Austin.

Cool video. Odd as hell to see him acting like that since he was basically the complete opposite on tv.

I remember the cage segment because Bret cussed up a storm, which was still unheard of at the time. Especially from someone who had been as clean cut as him for so long.

According to Hart's book, they really weren't going to go anywhere with a Vince vs Hart feud persay, but I'm sure they were laying the ground work to some sort of screw job which is where some theorists feel that the Montreal Screw Job was a work. But who knows for sure.

For years after I was always convinced the screw job was a work. I mean it was a great way for the WWF, Vince McMahon & Bret Hart to all get something out from it.
Bret would become the most talked about wrestler in the industry heading into WCW, plus it was a way of getting himself back as a face as Bret admitted he didn't think he ever could after the USA bashing he did as a Pro-Canadian character throughout the year.
For Vince, the scene was set for the super heel Mr. McMahon character that would eventually turn the WWF around in his feud with Steve Austin.
And the WWF would save a fortune in wages that would have been paid to Bret, instead paying Tyson $3m to help the WWF in catching WCW. Also Bret was anti Attitude and didn't agree with the way the company was headed, so was another way of getting around this problem. Also rumoured was Vince was set to make Shawn the top guy in the company again, as Austin's injury was still 50/50 as whether he would fully recover, putting Bret on the back burner as regards the WWF Title. As you all know Bret despised Michaels. Throw in the fact that the Wrestling with Shadows DVD culminated with the most controversial match in wrestling history, made me wonder if this was a great deal for everyone involved.

One bit I forgot Bret pocketed a huge $3m contract from WCW for quitting the WWF, not bad eh?

I'd rather see Hart vs McMahon at WM26 then Cena vs Orton XXXVII

I'd rather see Hart vs McMahon at WM26 then Cena vs Orton XXXVII I'd rather not. McMahon is 60+ years old, and sadly, Bret can't wrestle anymore.

Wouldn't be a match though, just an all out brawl!
