A matchup between Fighters.com’s seventh-ranked heavyweight “Cigano” Junior dos Santos (9-1) and former UFC title challenger “Napão” Gabriel Gonzaga (11-4) is in the works, Fighters.com has confirmed with a source close to one of the fighters. Fighters.com hasn’t confirmed the date of the fight and no contracts are signed. If the matchup is in December, it’s likely to occur at UFC 107 at the FedExForum in Memphis December 12. However, according to unconfirmed reports, that card is already stacked with pay-per-view quality matchups. UFC 108 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas January 2 and is also a likely event for the matchup. “Cigano” forced once-feared “Cro Cop” Mirko Filipovic (25-8-2) to quit at 2:00 of round three at UFC 103 in Dallas September 19. Gonzaga TKO’d Chris Tuchscherer (15-2) in 2:27 at UFC 102. Dos Santos’s only loss is by armbar submission while Gonzaga is a notoriously skilled and powerful submission grappler, making the matchup keenly interesting. The matchup also continues a trend in the UFC of Brazilians fighting Brazilians in big fights. www.fighters.com/10/11/junior-dos-santos-v-gabriel-gonzaga-in-ufc

Very interesting... if it does happen, I see Dos Santos winning by KO in the second.

Good. I heard Gonzaga would be facing Nogueira and was very disappointed to hear that, but now I'm glad to see Gonzaga matched up with Dos Santos.

Good. I heard Gonzaga would be facing Nogueira and was very disappointed to hear that, but now I'm glad to see Gonzaga matched up with Dos Santos. I'd rather see Dos Santos vs. Nogueira to be honest with you. Dos Santos vs. Gonzaga: If Dos Santos wins, he beats another big name but is still behind Nog. If Gonzaga wins, he just beat a surging contender... And is behind Nog. Gonzaga vs. Nogueiria: If Gonzaga wins, he beats a legend and former champion coming off a win, but what now? Does he fight Velasquez? If Nog wins, he beats a a former title contender and proves that he is ready to fight for the title again. Dos Santos vs. Nogueira: If Dos Santos wins, he's undefeated in the UFC and has smashed two legends back to back. It's time to give him a Title shot. If Nogueira wins, then the hype for the Title fight will be much greater than just coming off the Couture fight. Either man winning is good for business.

Dana white already announced NOG gets the winner of Lesnar vs. Carwinn... I'm aware of that. I'm also aware than the winner of Dos Santos vs. Gonzaga will be in the same exact position they are in now after this fight. It's a waste fight.

I agree on the fact of this fight being a waste. But I dont think they should take NOGs contendership that they have given him away by making him face someone else. Say he loses. Then he basically lost his shot.. Not fair to him IMO...

Then he basically lost his shot.. Not fair to him IMO... I can agree with it wouldn't be fair to say he gets a title shot and take it away, but I also don't think it's fair that he is even getting the title shot. Regardless of his legacy, I think Dos Santos is higher on the totem pole in the UFC right now. If any one has a problem with that, then they could solve it by having the two fight. If Nog really deserves it, he'll get it along with the confidence booster of silencing the critics. Nog getting a title shot s more things up than most people realize. Dos Santos is surging right now and is about a fight away from getting a crack at the gold. His training partner is getting a shot at the winner. What happens if Nogueira wins and Dos Santos won't fight him? Then there is a big ugly sh*t storm of a #1 contender who can't fight for the title.

It's a good enough fight for Dos Santos anyway.

Great fight
With Nog set up to challenge winner of Brock/ Carwin already this gives a superb opportunity for several guys to work towards the next title shot with a strong win in next fight.
-Dos Santos vs. Gonzaga -Rothwell vs. Velasquez -Mir vs. Kongo
Plus also got up & comers who will now doubt be in a far stronger position come the end of 2010. -Duffee vs. Buentello -Barry vs. Hardonk -Presumably Big Country walking through TUF
Screw the Haters, the way I see it the UFC Heavyweight scene is looking pretty solid.
