We've all been eagerly awaiting to find out more about Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's next project at Marvel. Details on "Nemesis" have been revealed. What might upset some fans is this project has nothing to do with any established Marvel characters. If fact, it has more in common with a certain character from another publisher... Millar's aim on this book is "What if Batman was the Joker. That's even pretty clear if you look at the image above. Millar said: "Yeah, a lot of people who've read it have been coming up with hilarious tag-lines. "What if Batman was The Joker?" is the tame one. "What if Batman was a total ****?" is maybe my favourite, although it's hardly going to be an ad. [It's] is a reversal of the Bruce Wayne or Tony Stark archetype. What if this genius billionaire was just this total crap, and the only thing that stood between him and a city was the cops? It's Batman versus Commissioner Gordon, in a weird way. Or maybe a super-villain version of "Se7en." A billionaire anarchist up against ordinary people. The Joker's the best thing in the Batman movies, so this guy is a bit of an amalgamation of all the stuff we like."Millar also gave a description of the series: "All the cops are needed to go up against a guy as formidable as this. He's almost supernatural, he's so good. But he happens to just be in a costume. Hopefully nobody's ever seen anything like it before. We're so used to supervillains fighting superheroes, I just thought, "Imagine if there was only one person on the planet like this, and he was actually a bad guy." How would cops deal with him, even though he has no super-powers? ...Very simply, I wanted to do a book about the world's greatest villain up against America's greatest cop. I just liked the high concept of that - the idea of a villain going around from country to country and having a battle of wits with the best guy that he can get his hands on. And he sends them a little funeral wreath with the date and time of when they're going to die on it, every one dying at precisely that time. All these cops in the Pacific Rim are dead, and then we come in at the American side of the story and see the struggle of this guy in just trying to stop him.It will be released in March 2010.
I thought I'd post about this because it looks like a pretty interesting series. I mean yes the main character does look a lot like a kind of Batman/Joker rip-off but I think this series could turn into something cool. I like that Millar is making a villain the main character and is doing something different with this character who was born into money and decided he wanted to be a hero. When it does come out I think I'll have to check it out and see if this idea is actually any good. So what does everyone else think about this series?

Has potential, but we'll see. Millar is a pretty decent writer even though he thinks all his material is original.

Did anyone check the first issue out?
I had no idea it came out this week and didn't even see it in my store so I had to get it from another place. But anyways I thought this first issue wasn't bad, does it feel like Millar is doing an anti-Batman? Yeah kinda. That may not be a bad thing though because it was kinda neat and all of the carnage and other things that happened in the first issue got me kinda interested in where the series is going to go. Such as what is Nemesis's origin story which they don't even hint at in this first issue and why he is trying to test all of these cops around the world. I'm really interested in what is going to happen in the next issue and I hope this series turns out to be another great one by Millar.

It's totally Anti-Batman. The first issue was pretty good, no great. I love a lot of Millar's stuff, but McNiven's artwork seemed shaky when normally it's great. It was still an enjoyable issue to me. Issue 2 doesn't come out until May 19th. Lame. Kick-Ass was really slow arriving, too.

i read it and it came across as just kind of a 'what if' change to dynamics to the batman world. first issue didn't reveal too much though so i'll hang in there.

Can't say I cared for it at all. Terrible dialogue and something just felt off about the whole issue to me. But its still got a great premise so I'll stick it out for a few more issues before I drop it.
I will say, I do dig his all white getup.

i enjoyed how he didn't stay within the confines of american soil, he in fact started elsewhere in asia. just kind of a feeling of internationality that i feel many (even most) comics miss.

Anyone read the 2nd issue?
I totally forgot that it came out. Overall I thought it was ok, putting his back story in the first pages of the 2nd issue was kinda weird and I kinda wish it was also a little more fleshed out. The ending really makes me want to see what is going to happen in the 3rd issue though.

yea, the ending was ing epic. one of my favourite current titles. seems kinda goofy that he is this epic mastermind but his arch nemesis is some cop he should be able to dispose of at will...but whatever, it's a good read.

I think he dosen't kill the cop off because he has never gone against someone who is as smart as he is and he maybe wants to play with him before he kills him off.

yea, i got that sense too and that's cool, he just doesn't seem like a worthy 'hero' in all this - i almost wish there was batman in this to go after him.

So Tony Scott is now set to direct a movie adaptation of Nemesis. I'm really interested in how the movie will turn out.

it ing fascinates me how quickly they can turn millar's work into movies...like c'mon, the basis of the comic is only now explained and already a movie?

True but his movies are good at making money, I mean Wanted made over $200 million in profit and Kick Ass made a $65 million dollar profit so studios probably want to jump on his projects as soon as they can.

yea, it's understandable. i feel like nemesis is taking waaay too long to mature though.

It dosen't help that they release a comic every 2 months (which makes it kinda forgettable) and I guess it is only going to have 4 issues. For some reason I actually thought it was going to be as long as Kick Ass at least.

I really can't believe that this is getting a movie. It's not even a good comic and has only had two issues so far.
