Shane Carwin Confirms Likely UFC 111 Title Fight, Agrees to Meet Frank Mir by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Dec 16, 2009 at 1:35 pm ET
Shane Carwin (11-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) said he's agreed to a reported UFC 111 fight with Frank Mir (13-4 MMA, 11-4 UFC) that's expected to earn the winner an interim heavyweight title.
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) reported early this morning that the two heavyweight contenders had been targeted for the March 27 event, which takes place at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
Carwin, who was slated to fight champ Brock Lesnar until the title-holder's recent illness, said he today accepted the Mir fight but still hopes to fight Lesnar someday.
"I do hope to someday get the opportunity to punch Brock a few times and hope he has a speedy and full recovery," Carwin wrote on his official Web site, shane-carwin.com.
Carwin said bout agreements haven't been signed but that he expects the Mir fight to be his next bout.
The fight marks the undefeated competitor's first in a year; he hasn't competed since his UFC 96 victory over Gabriel Gonzaga, and scheduled bouts with Velasquez (UFC 104) and Lesnar (UFC 106 and then UFC 108) ultimately failed to materialize.
However, he expects a competitive matchup with Mir, who recently rebounded from a July loss to Lesnar with a quick beatdown of Cheick Kongo this past weekend in the UFC 107 co-main event. The former champ has now won four of his past five fights.
"I will have been out of the octagon for about a year when this fight happens, but I expect to be in the best shape of my life," stated Carwin, who's posted 11 first-round stoppages in his 11 career wins. "I have a ton of respect for my proposed opponent. He has a good stand up game and can be effective on the ground. The only way to become the best fighter is to continually challenge yourself against the best fighters in the world."
Hopefully no injuries happen, hah.

if Mir can get past Carwin than I will be extremely impressed. Because that will mean not only has he been one of the few athletes in HISTORY to make a successful comeback after a life-threatening accident...but he also has come back looking better than he did prior to the accident.
beating Big Nog, Lesnar, and Kongo is a pretty good list of dudes. Carwin is a beast though..I thought that if anyone really stood a chance against Lesnar it would be Carwin because Carwin was like a Mirror image of Brock but only with heavier hands. I can't wait to see this fight..

I can't wait to see this fight.. I don't think that fight against Big Nog counts seeing how he had a staff infection and a tempreture of 101 on the night before the fight. I would like to see how Mir would do against Nog when he's healthy like in the fight against Couture. With Brock he got lucky with that ankle lock and as we all know, wasn't so lucky the second time around and a victory over Kongo isn't anything to be braggin' about seeing how Kongo sucks balls. I really would like to see this fight because I admit that Mir does look alot better in shape than he did in his fight against Brock at UFC 100, but Mir is still a douchebag nonetheless. I would love to see Carwin knock him the f**k out and go on to face Lesnar when he's back and healthy.

No doubt...I still think Mir has a HUGE MOUTH..and is a big douche bag who thinks he is on Fedor's level...but the guy looks incredible.
and beating Brock in his octagon debut and beating Big Nog while he had a staph infection isn't the best wins to get against those guys..but they count as wins regardless.
everyone talks sh** on Kongo but dropping Kongo honestly impressed the hell out of me. I have never seen Kongo hurt.

I want to see this JUST so I can see Mir/Lesnar 3. Does Brock have anything else to prove? No. Will it be hilarious to see him get beat by Lesnar again? Oh hell yes.

I'm preparing myself to get flamed here but still:
I really dont think Carwin has really proved himself yet against decent competition. Think about it, the only "name" he finished was Gonzaga, and he was even rocked early on in that fight. Did they give Houston a title shot after he KO'ed Jardine? I really do believe Mir is going to expose Carwin in this fight. Don't get me wrong Carwin is a great fighter and I'm a fan of his, but I'm only giving him a puncher's chance in this fight...lucky for him he has a great punch though.

I hope Carwin wins so it can lead into Carwin/Lesnar, which I really want to see.

Good decision by UFC by having an Interuim Title just so they can have a champion to headline shows until Brock is able to return & then unify the belts. Presumable Mir/Carwin will then defend aghainst winner of Nog/ Cain. Hopefully by then Brock will know if able to return & aim for 2010 NYE show or 2011 Superbowl weekend. This way lesnar can fully recover & get back in shape. Plus by then JDS will have racked up some more wins & be inline after that.
Of course with how things currently are they'll all get Swine Flu & the UFC will just disolve the Heavyweight division!!!

on the same thought as the previous 2 posts... i personally felt that this was a great matchup, but didnt need the interim title. you wait for the result of nog/cain and the result of this matchup... then put the interim title on the winner/winner battle. with an easy big payday, when lesnar is ready to go.
but i guess its best to get the interim belt on somebody as soon as possible.
