Now for anyone watching or following WWE in the early 2003 know, Kurt Angle almost didn't make his match at WM XIX against Brock Lesnar. Now, I remember being very nervous waiting to hear whether Angle would or would not wrestle.
During that time I know Chris Benoit's name had been thrown around at Angle's replacement. Does anyone know what other possible replacements for Angle on that night because I cannot remember any.

...I never heard that, but was that right, seeing as he was the champion going into the match?
I agree, he was in pain badly in that match, and TBH, it didn't feel like it should've closed the show.

I think Kurt Angle versus Brock Lesnar was a better headline than Triple H versus Booker T. I am a strong believer that title matches should close the show, so that would rule out the possibility of Rock/Austin, Hogan/McMahon or Jericho/HBK closing the show.

No, I agree, I'm just pointing out the quality of the match was not as "main event" as I personally would've liked. It's still a good match, just IMO could've been better...

Never heard of it tbh. Although if they really wanted to replace him they could've done like they did that one time on Smackdown and put Angles brother in there they look alike lol

Have Eric be on WM on Kurt's place. Nobody hears about an Angle again, until Kurt's back and says he never lost the championship, and it was his brother who has there. Then he could have asked for a rematch, and since Lesnar was going to face Big Show at Vengeance, Angle gets added. But when thinking about the match at WM XIX, it wouldn't have been good if Eric replaced Kurt.

Angle vs. Lesnar is one of two WrestleMania matches that make me cringe when I watch them, because I know one of the guys is in bad shape.
The other is Shawn Michaels vs. Stone Cold, when HBK's back was completely screwed.

Selfish thing to say, but I REALLY wish the shooting star press ended that match. It would have been "the" moment, imo.

I remember, per all the news sites - that Angle was almost 100% going to have to sit out Wrestlemania 19. The Wrestlemania 19 main event of Brock vs. Kurt was announced for a Smackdown prior to Mania. Everyone thought and knew Kurt was going to drop the belt then and there to Brock, and Benoit would face Brock for the WWE Title at Wrestlemania. Benoit was the obvious face to get the push, due to his amazing match he had w/ Kurt - 2 Months earlier at the Royal Rumble.
It was rumored that Kurt was in so much pain and so banged up, that most people wondered how he would he even pull of any sort of regular match to Brock at the Smackdown taping.
Well, that's when we were all swerved - and Kurt Angle's (newly shaved head) Brother, Eric - swerved us all and rolled up Brock for a cheap win.
So, Kurt wound up gutting it out and going on to defend the gold afterall, against Brock - in their epic bout at Wrestlemania 19.

Without question. Say what you want about how much of a dick he was back then, he stepped up and did the right thing in that match. Not backing out of dropping the title since he was hurt and had every excuse to not wrestle. I won't call him a consummate professional at the time, but that was a classy move. OP: I'd never heard that Angle was in such bad shape then, but Angle at 70% did one hell of a job.

But didn't the Undertaker threaten him backstage to do the job. I believe he even was backstage with taped fists if HBK refused to do the job.

God watching the documentary for XIX and seeing the shape Angle was in is enough to make me cringe. The man was in terrible shape and went out there and gave it his all. That is why he is one of the greatest ever.

Every time i watch Angle vs. Lesnar I cringe at the thought as to how close Angle was to REALLY ending his career. Oddly enough, it was Brock that needed the help out. Man I wish he had hit that shooting star press to end the match. What a way to end it!
