I've been spinning Three Days Grace, Shinedown, Breaking Benjamin and Seether a lot lately. They're in the vein of Flyleaf. Or at least they tour together sometimes.

Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Incubus, The Cure. I'm old school. You may also like Them Crooked Vultures.

I gotta say, no offense to all you people, but I get a bit excited to see a topic about "alternative rock", and constantly get disappointed when I see all it is is bands like Three Days Grace, Shinedown, Seether, Breaking Benjamin, and Flyleaf. When I personally get asked what I listen to by people I really do not know, just based on how I look (which is long hair and a goatee, blue jeans, t-shirt, and a hoodie usually), those are some of the first bands I'm asked if I like. I'm usually a polite person, and say, "eh, not really", but really, I want to say, "hell no." To be honest, none of those bands come to mind when I think "Alternative Rock". I used to listen to an "alternative rock" radio station, until it shut down in 2007. None of these bands people are talking about in here were ever played on there. These are bands that come to mind when I think "Alternative Rock"...
Pixies Smashing Pumpkins Arcade Fire CAKE Guster Nada Surf My Morning Jacket Pearl Jam R.E.M. Radiohead
...so yeah, those would probably be my recommendations.

The original poster who started it obviously has their idea of AltRock, so why would we recommend stuff totally different to what they are after? It's hard to classify music. What is "rock"? Just plain ol' rock? Would it be stuff like The Eagles? Whatever it is, I'm sure the bands we all listed are an alternative style of rock to that.

No need to defend yourself, it wasn't really a shot at anyone, especially you.

Just plain ol' rock? Would it be stuff like The Eagles? Whatever it is, I'm sure the bands we all listed are an alternative style of rock to that. I guess that's fair. The topic says "alternative rock", I just posted what I've known to be "alternative rock". A lot of the bands I listed are what I've grown up knowing to be "alternative rock". Bands like Sonic Youth, The Smiths, Violent Femmes, even more well known early 90s "Grunge" acts like Nirvana, Alice In Chains, and Soundgarden, and kinda in that area Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam. To me, the quintessential "alternative" band would be the Pixies, and as such were at the top of my list. -CMD

Doesn't matter if Red Hot Chili Peppers are AltRock, they are awesome nonetheless.

If you want good alternative rock, go out RIGHT NOW and buy Sunburn by Fuel. One of the few albums that I think is perfect.
