If I was Vince I would keep Cena. Who will be making money for him in 10 years? Didn't he sign a 10 year contract a few years ago?

I'd choose Cena. Bret would be nice but who really cares about GM's that much. They don't really sell shirts or PPV's. EDIT: replace swoggle for bret. That would be the best upgrade ever. But seriously I would replace Hornswoggle with anyone even a random bum off the street.

I refuse to see how this is a stupid question, this is arguably the most anticipated return ever, and it can't happen unless you give up your biggest star. So what do you do? Go down in the history books with this return, or release Cena, who is already in the history books anyways?

The phrase "one step forward, two steps back" fits nicely with your idea

The phrase "one step forward, two steps back" fits nicely with your idea Eh, I just thought of it since Cena isn't on Raw this week and Bret is, so I'm asking that if it stayed that way, would you do it.

I'll say yes, here's why and how.
Bret has the ability to draw back people who WWE lost when WCW went under, even as GM, because it's Bret Hart.
Kids will show up with or with out Cena. You just have to take the guy with the most charisma and good looks and throw him in that place, or CM Punk. The fact is, John Cena is replaceable, every one in WWE but Triple H, HBK, Undertaker, and Vince is. All you have to do is tell the crowd that John Cena "didn't want to entertain them anymore" and you're good. When I was a kid, I had no god damn clue otherwise, I'll bet these kids don't either.
It may knock WWE down for a second, but I doubt forever. Sure TNA could get Cena; but as long as those kids buy that new star, it's fine.
Just making an opposite side argument.

No matter how much I hate Cena, probably not because it'd be bad for business. I'd be all for it, if WWE could get Jeff Hardy back or (try to) make a new star as popular as Cena is. But I doubt it, so no.

Cena would be kept. It would be a no brainer from a business perspective. I can't wait to see Bret again, but why would you keep a man who can no longer wrestle over their biggest draw.

I'm confused as to why John Cena leaving has anything to do with Bret Hart returning? Why does Cena HAVE to be released for Bret Hart to be a big draw? So yeah, it does seem a stupid question. Or are you basically asking who I'd rather have in the WWE (or more to your point who would be better for business in the WWE) if there was some hypothetical situation where only one of them could stay?!?
To answer the question though, John Cena, without a shadow of a doubt. Cena has years ahead of him, Bret Hart might not even be in good enough condition to wrestle, so it's obvious to me.

Cena, along with DX, is their biggest merch sellers. Cena might even have Stone Cold and Hogan topped. Seriously... I've never seen so many shirts, hats, wristbands and other stuff being worn as I did for Cena when I went to a house show a few weeks back.
They even have a pretty decent sized teenage girl fan base coming to their shows now because of Cena, which I can't remember ever happening before.
That being said, Cena isn't going anywhere for a LONG time. They seen what happened when the let The Rock become a full fledged movie star... they won't let it happen again.

There is alot of people saying they'd keep Bret over Cena. But the fact is, the only people who'd really be satisfied with Bret on a consistent weekly basis over Cena are the smarks(who already watch anyway no matter what) and the OLD OLD school WWF fans- and since the WWE isn't going back to that way of being anytime soon...it'd be a waste of effort to try and lure them back given the product's target demographic and way of building guys up. None of those old school guys are finding the fountain of youth anytime soon, and it's necessary to move on with the future- and Cena is and has been the face of that new generation for a very long time now.
